Hello! I am going to be grabbing an RGB SCART cable off of ebay to use on my large type (not Jr) US SNES. I was planning on using the Specialty AV RGB SCART to Component adapter ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SCART-RGB-to-YUV-Component-Video-Converter-Scaler-/220698772855 ) which I read a lot of people were using successfully. However, I was trying to find a cheaper option when I ran across this for $4.99: http://worldwidesatellites.com/scart-rgb-component-adapter-p-490.html . I'd like to try it, and it would be an amazing price at $4.99, but I have the feeling that I'm missing something, and it won't work for this purpose.

The cable I am going to use comes in two flavors - a standard version ( www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Nintendo-stereo-RGB-SCART-lead-with-RCA-out-FULLY-SHIELD-US-model-SNES-/160733436186 ) and a version designed for converter boxes that outputs pure sync instead of composite sync for "superior compatibility with these devices. May also eliminate visual artifacts caused by composite sync." I assume that the latter is the one I want, but does anyone have any suggestions?

The TV I'm using is an HDTV CRT (Sony 34XBR960) that apparently converts 240p to 480i, although it still looks great to me. I am planning on getting a professional Sony PVM studio monitor at some point as well.

Thanks for any and all advice!

That $4.99 box doesn't transcode the signal. You'd be feeding RGB into a TV's component input.

Its plug is incorrect gender anyway (look at the picture), a SCART cable's end won't fit even if it could work.

And yes you will need some kind of sound breakout cable. Unless games being mute is OK.

Thanks so much for the help, Lum! Since I couldn't see the back of that $4.99 box, I just assumed that it was input based on the description.

Both of the cables I referenced have sound breakout, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice between composite and "pure" sync.

I am pretty sure you can get one of those SCART to YUV converters cheaper. I bought one last year for about $25 with shipping off of eBay.

Wrong way around. You would be feeding component into a RGB scart input.

Normally yes. But I was speaking in the context of his idea. Plugging a SNES RGB cable into a gender changer, followed by the component/RGB box, leads to the reverse of that box's purpose.

You cant do that. Output pins of scart are different to input pins.

Also, even if you did do something like that... how do you know its just a "dumb converter" and just internally wires? ANY sort of conversion would have inputs and outputs and you cant just force an input on an output and expect it to work.

Exactly. I didn't say it would work. At best you'd get similar failed results as setting PS2 to RGB with a component cable. Some TVs attempt to show a picture from such incomplete signals.
