Nothing new. Pretty big thing in Japan when I was there 2007/2008. I kind of liked the idea.

 

I think this concept has been around for a while, but I like it. More love and less hate is always a good thing. (as long as the hugs are consensual)

 

Japan's mascot characters occasionally still do that.
