FreeMcBoot on a PSX DESR

My PSX's DVR laser died a while back and I decided I didn't want to have it sitting around in my basement anymore. I have two legitimate memory cards, one of which is loaded with Free McBoot, I have the noobie installer on a flash drive, I'm using a normal PS2 to run the installer, but when I try to use the PSX installer it fails immediately. Can anyone guide me through what I need to do? I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong somewhere, but it's so hard to find info on the PSX DESR.

EDIT: My install media source was corrupt in some way, so I have Free McBoot loading to the configurator but I'm a little confused from there. From here I might be able to figure it out from standard Free McBoot resources I hope?

EDIT 2: Figured it out for myself. It doesn't actually load into any interface besides the configurator, you need to configure your hotkeys with the configurator and boot directly into the ELF file you need to run. My PSX ran .hack//fragment just fine as soon as I figured this out.

If you have trouble in the future and your memory card is not a clone, make sure you get your Free McBoot from an official source every other source I tried had a broken PSX installer. You will need to find where your ELF files are located and change the hotkeys to target them. They will not be in the right place by default.

 

Have you searched the forum for older posts? I'm sure there's a thread that goes into detail about this from a few years back.

Unfortunately, I don't think it was ever possible to get it working... I could be wrong though.

 

I did search first, but none of the threads I found specifically mentioned Free McBoot and I wasn't going to browse every thread about the PSX until I found it. There are like 3-4 pages worth of threads talking about the PSX. So it wasn't practical.

I did figure out what I needed to do however and I edited my post to reflect how I did it, so that if people struggle in the future they can at least reference this thread.
