Fresh out of shrinkwrap disc looks "cloudy" but works fine. What's up?

Here is a picture (not my disc) of the "cloudy" thing I'm talking about.

An unused fresh out of the shrinkwrap dreamcast game of mine looks like this. It plays fine, but I'm wondering if I should expect it to degrade significantly or become unreadable in the next few months.

Is this "disc rot"? Or is it related to the plastic (and not the foil with the data)?

Your issue is with the plastic layer IMO, which isnt disc rot. Despite many incorrect threads on here.

Seen it many times, never caused a problem.

Hm, I've encountered this on several games, but not console titles. Most of the time I've seen it on low budget PC games and cheap chinese DVD-Rs. Brand new ones of course. I have yet to see a disc to develop this cloudy look over time.

Might be due to low production standards, maybe it's the adhesive layer that's not properly applied.

So far all of these games and discs still work and the cloudy/miscolored part doesn't seem to change or grow, so I'm pretty sure it's an issue that's part of the production process and doesn't come over time.

I've got loads of discs like that, that have been like that from the beginning. Typically with cheaply-produced discs like demos, freebies etc.

Yep, normal to see.. I have plenty of music CDs, game CDs and DVDs. It's just poor manufacturing.
