Ok so this isn't really a 'mod', but I was wondering it it was possible to hook up a Famicom Disk system to the toploader US NES neatly.

It looks pretty straightforward to use a Famicom-to-NES pin convertor, but all the pin convertors I've seen have backwards cartridge loading - are there any out there that allow you to insert the FDS ram cart facing forward when hooking up to a toploader NES?

I'm not sure. The official 60 pin to 72 pin adapter also faces carts backwards. You will encounter some problems with using a disk system on a top loader. It requires a mod to both the adapter and the console to use expansion audio. Other than that it should work fine. If you have soldering experience and one of the generic adapters, you could not only mod it for expansion audio but also rewire it to face the correct way.

Even the same seller I bought the 72 to 60 pin adapter has the Famicom cart facing the other way in the "FC to NES" adapter. I agree with MonkeyBoyJoey, get a regular Famicom and you can mod it yourself. They usually cost about $40 in auctions, and require repair and a little modding.
