Mark is this one of the units that can rip GDR's and then extract the data?

Yep. Although I've been unable to dump 2 of my GD-Rs (since they're terribly scratched but play on a retail Dreamcast), I've been able to successfully dump a System-Disc 2 & Sonic Adventure Japanese.

I am so tempted to get this due to recent issues with GDR ripping but ugh, No cash at all this month :\

Does it require an external GDROM drive? I cant see anywhere where one would pop out.

Did you get the System Disc 2 dumped and burned on a blank GDR? I was trying to make another one, but never was able to do it.

Actually, it can connect to an HKT-01 through the HOST SCSI port or run as a standalone unit. Just insert a GD-ROM to the GD-X and you can either burn an image on the HD to a GD-R through a connected GD-Writer, burn an image from the GD-ROM in its drive to a GD-R, or dump data from the GD-ROM in the drive to the internal HD.

I've never actually burnt anything to a GD-R (trying to preserve my last few remaining). My guess is that it would try to dump all data to the HD before burning to a GD-R through a GD-Writer (so that it wouldn't stop midway in the burning process with corrupt GD-ROM data).

Considering that Sega made it so the burn process went once with the laser off and then again with it on I'd say you'd be right. Buffer underruns were not all that uncommon when doing direct disk reads back when cd burners were becoming the norm (circa 2001/2), so in 1998/99 with a tech that was basically only theirs it wouldn't be out of the question to dump the data to a reliable medium (the SCSI hdd) with a very fast bus. IDE->IDE burning on the same channel isn't that great of an idea, works but if you watch that buffer it fluctuates wildly on any burn rate.

Probably just another way for Sega to make sure noone wasted a gd-r due to bad data. Wonder if you can burn to the maximum amount of gd burners supported on the GD-X at the same time.

$450 is extremely tempting, but I'm forced to wait until next month as my bank account ran off with ebay.
