I bought this a while ago for 200 bux thinking that i could reveal it's secrets .
But no luck , I have tried everything and the closest I get to functioning is a network error screen .

Some background on this disk , This disc is the only tool (besides Hardware replacement ) used in xbox refurb centers . The disc is basically made to flash the xbox's eeprom return a recently repaired xbox to a stock state . From what I have gathered the disc works in tandum with some kind of server , but it does not use the Ethernet to connect to the server it uses the 4th contoller ports usb ( determeined when I plugged random devices into the ports and got different error screens ) . Some people Believe that these disks are full of eeprom and that was the reason I bought it was to make a pretty penny . But it is my personal opinion that the eeproms would be on the server it was connected to ( becasue it is a pressed disk ) . But I have yet to find a sucesful method of dumping this disk . And trust me I have tried everything .

Asking 150 or best offer and really want this to go to a real techy that can possibly figure it out .

The disk won't run unless you're connected to the server appliance, which you can see in picture 20 here:

    http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Manufacturing_Process_Pictures

Basicly microsoft knew that the disks would fall into public hands and made it so you would need both the disk and the server to do anything useful. They realized that it would be easy to steal a disk, but someone would notice if the server was gone. Most testing is done with a controller in port 4, there was some logical reason for that, but i don't remember what it was. That being said, you might find some interesting tidbits if you decompile the xbe into assembly code, but i think most of the information behind the disk is already public.

Still interesting from a collector's point of view.

  3. Rofl, dumping this disc is very simple, just like any other Xbox disc in fact, trust me.

    Disc contents =

default.xbe = which does all the work.

Video_T.S folder, with the May 2001 promo video

Oldengineer is correct. There's no special protection on that disc. Like ProgrammingAce mentioned though, it's also not much use to anyone outside of the factory or Microsoft. Neat looking coaster, but pretty non functional.

You my friend, are what we like to refer to as a "special case."

It's true that something is always useful to someone, but for the majority of people out there, including 99% of modded Xbox owners, the disc is pretty much just a trophy. And those that can use the disc...well if you can use it, chances are good you probably already have a copy of it. ;-)

Their is special protection as dumping it normally yields a 400k default.xbe . But when creating a xiso on the xbox it is a dvd9 image that is over 6.9 gigs .

    Best. Quote. Ever. Rofl.

No, that's what you should get, no special protection. As OE said, the default.xbe does all of the "work" (actually, it really only acts as a communications relay with the server, so it really doesn't do any of the work). The reason you get a 6 gig image from it is because of the video on there. It's uncompressed video footage put on there just to take up space.

I'd like to hear what OE has managed to do with the disk, but that might be a topic for another day.

  10. It's not.

...The Video_TS is just a few hundred meg, the extra gig's are disc layout padding to optimise the access seek time.
