Probably means the card would not swipe (it was fake) so they typed in the number.

I read in a paper since Chip & Pin started first here in the UK fruad in stores had decreased (although crimes by foreigners with details stolen has increased) and it said that US banks didn't fancy the idea of entering a pin when paying... Why? If there was Chip & Pin in the US the poster wouldn't of suffered the fraud he encountered...

The card never really ever has to leave your sight with C&P because you shove the card in the keypad infront of you yourself. Although it does have it's problems still..

Well over here in most stores you have the option of either entering your secret PIN number or signing for purchases. Problem is for most atm/bank cards you can do both, which is what leaves us open to this kind of attack.

Those punks install external readers over the slots and read your pin number by your typing with minicams. We should all be aware.

Mainly because it's been hacked. Apparently you are ok as long as it does an online verification, 90% of transactions do ( so there are alot that don't ).

The biggest reason for switching seems to be to remove one of your arguments, which was that it wasn't your signature. Now you have to work harder to prove it wasn't you.

I just had two charges on my credit from russia, now I have to wait for a new card. Luckily it was an american express card, so they instantly reversed the charges.

    [ATM/SPAIN/SERVICE RANT]
As some people might already know, I work with something that often involves a lot of traveling.

Lately, I've been stuck in the heart of Madrid/Spania.
Every day is like a new adventure here! (Especially when you don't speak Spanish.)

I dunno how ATMs are in all places of the world, but Spain is the first place I've been to where it feels like every card slot is too tight for your card and it takes like half a forever for the card to enter the machine.

After trying to take out cash on a machine one evening, my card got STUCK on the way out of the machine. And the machine kept telling me to take my card. I could SEE my card, but not reach it. It was STUCK in the card slot. (Stuck because it was made of cheap thin plastic that makes it bend in all directions like some sort of starfish.)

So, after 2 minutes of fiddling and cursing while the ATM kept reminding me that I had to remove my card before I could have my money, the ATM changed its mind and ate my card.

"We've got your card, dipshit! Please call ______"

So I dial the number, just to be met by Spanish customer service... Sweet!
I try to tell them that my card had been eaten by the machine (using only the words found on the screen of the ATM, a receipt and a food coupon). Oddly enough, the guy on customer service, after first saying he didn't speak English he "softened up" and progressively learned more English than you can expect to hear from any other Spanish service I've been in contact with recently.

Turns out they couldn't send out someone to crank open the machine for me "at this hour", so he says I should either call again tomorrow or just call my own bank and get my card closed (What kind of service is that? "Yeah, we've got your card! Please close it so we can keep it!)

So I call my own bank to CLOSE/BLOCK my card and get a new one.
*Press 2 for service in English* <- That's like music to my ears.

Upon pressing 2, I get a Spanish message saying something about it being too late for English service "Here, speak to Spanish service".
I ask if the woman speaks English. She says she don't. Then they just hang up on me. (Sweet, I didn't even get to do an encore on my Spanish/English lessons.) So no closed card.

The day after, I try calling the bank who owned the ATM that ate my card. They tell me that now I CAN'T have my card back. 'cause they're put in a secure box and locked away for all eternity (WHAT!?) in stead of just returning it to me (It has my name and my bank's name+address on it, damn it!). So, they show me how much trust they have in their own ATM-security employees by telling me that I should just call my bank and get the card closed! (SWEET!)

I call my bank again, hit 2 for English, just to be met by someone who apparently just likes to pretend they know English. (That seems to be fairly common here...)

And ofcourse, as every other damn bank in the world, my bank of choice has open customer service hours between "After I've gone to work" and "Before I go to lunch". Which means that I have to get up early as fuck, head down there and call in an hour late for work. Upon getting there, I finally got blessed with someone who actually spoke English (though, rather limited. The concept of an ATM eating my card seemed more like a concept for some comical sketch made for a satirical newspaper than an actual problem to them).

Anyway, now they say I'll have a new card and all that jazz in a week (Of course, I pretty much expect that week to be about 6 months long. 'cause that's the time it took for most of my coworkers to get their first card from these guys. I was just somehow lucky and got mine a couple of days after opening an account).

Thats bad luck, never seen a ATM/cash machine boot up before but would be worried if one did.

I remember last year on my way to college i stopped of at tesco to get money from my account so i could get some lunch afterwards and the machine slightly ejected my card after i just checked my balance then sucked it back in then going to the please insert card screen, I was not pleased and headed straight to the bank just up the road, Luckily the women was very pleasent and got some cash from my account till i got my new card otherwise i would have had no money not even in my other accounts and i wasn't putting any other bank cards in a machine that day.

I use as much cash as possible now. Me and my girlfriend both had our debit cards cloned. Luckily they could withdraw 100$ from my account (the rest was in another) and I could easily prove I didn't do it my self. I bought breakfast at 8:00am in Kingston Ontario and the withdraw of $100 has been made in the Montreal area (300 km away from kingston) at 8:30am.
Obviously my truck can't do 600 km/h. Since I could easily prove I was really in Kingston I filed my claid for fraud, two days later, my bank already had refund my 100$ !
