When I switched over to using a plasma display in the living room some years back, I deprived myself of a bunch of the old-school light gun games - a situation partly recovered through purchase of a PS2/xbox compatible topgun, but that still left me without the ability to use older PS1 lightgun titles.

So, in a recent rejig of the bedroom, I moved a few bits of gaming gear in there to use with my trusty old 25" Sony CRT. Happiness ensues, as now I can enjoy Point Blank once again.

I wasn't even sure it would work, since the CRT is a PAL unit & the console was an NTSC PS2 - but it worked just fine (the set, like many UK CRTs, handles NTSC without issue, but given the lightgun/software was probably setup to expect 60Hz NTSC blanking, I was pleasantly suprised that it worked).

Since I also have an NTSC CLD-A100 laseractive unit, I moved that into the bedroom & obtained Lethal Enforcers I & II with a Justifier - but sadly, this refused to recognise any shots to the screen (it acted like you were constantly reloading). Next move was to grab my little Sharp 14" CRT & try it with that, since it's a true multistandard set that can natively do PAL/NTSC/SECAM - sure enough, it works fine with that.

So, I have a working solution, but the 14" is a bit small & having 2 CRTs in the bedroom is kinda crowded.

My question is: Why would the Guncon1 games on the PS2 work with the PAL CRT, when the CLD-A100 Justifier games do not do so? It must be down to the difference between the native NTSC capability of the 14" vs the Sony's NTSC abilities (which I assume to be PAL-60 output) - but, what's different about the PS2 setup that allows it to work?

Well Guncon1 and regular Lightguns work differently and their accuracy difference reflects that. I'm not sure how exactly a regular lightgun would be effected by PAL and NTSC differences but wouldn't it make the most sense to get all NTSC or all PAL items to ensure they would work? Or get a larger multi-signal CRT display.
