they really DON'T teach you how to drive in driver's ed. all i did was watch a bunch of boring videos.

 

Over here you have to take ~22 lessons (60min each) minimum to take the practical test. I don't know what it looks like in the US though... in Ireland for instance they have a retarded system of taking a small bunch of preparation lessons and then you are for like one year a "Learner" with a sticker on your car - that doesn't keep you away from driving around all the country wherever you want, mind you... although no real education had taken place. If I recall correctly it was after about a year when the Learner had to take his final test to get the real license.

Some Irish driver might correct me, this is just how I'd heard it (and I've seen some pretty crappy "Learner"-sticker-carrying drivers as well^^).

 

That sticker system actually sounds a lot better than the system we have here (similar to Germany). You will learn some basic stuff by taking driving lessons but you'll really learn to drive after your free to go, atleast that's what I experienced. I mean, when I'm going somewhere it's totally different than when some dude's sitting next to me saying "right here" and "left there". Most people who can't drive still cannot drive after they got their license by passing their exam and lot of people will never learn how to drive properly.

I remember when I got my license and there were people taking their exam for the 8th time. Eventually they will pass on a lucky day. You might say "that will at least keep them off the road for a while" and that is true, but for people who do want to drive, it's a bitch to get the damn piece of paper. The average amount of lessons people take here is 40 (seems a bit high, but that's what they say) also 50-60 minutes each and they cost about ~€40. You have to wait a month before you can take an exam which costs about €200.

The lessons I had were rubbish too, my instructor was quite a douchebag but I was to lazy to switch to another driving school. That's why I started driving with my dad on sundays, and later on weekdays too (without license). Much more relaxed, and I leaned a lot more from just that than all the lessons I had (~20).

In the end it'll only cost a lot a shitload of money and time.

 

Japanese take about 40 lessons and 2 stupidly hard paper tests then a course skill test followed by a real driving test then a first aid test. I know because I had to do it too. The thing is that I could already drive due to taking lessons and passing in the UK. Anyway, Japanese do all that yet they drive like shit. I'm not kidding either. I'm a good driver with quite a bit of skill. Sounds like I'm being big headed but I'm not. EVERY DAY I see at least 10 arse holes on the road.

Actually my dad always said that Asians in general are bad drivers. I thought he was just being racist in his own way but now that I live in Japan I think it's true. After all, how many Asian motor sport stars are there? Not a lot.

If it makes you feel any better, Asians around here aren't very good at driving either. I'm not racist, I just have a lot of Asian friends. :lol:
