The DVD tray on my Xbox has always been a bit fussy ever since I bought it at the thrift store. It will open, but a lot of the time I need to flick the bezel upwards with my finger to get it to eject, and when I push the button to close the tray it often times will get stuck unless i give it a little nudge to get started. The system was otherwise in great condition and I've had no performance problems with it, but that drive quirk really irritates me. Any tips on how I can fix it?
Its very likely the same cause of the "Sticky Drive" issue. You need to remove the rubber belt from the two wheels under the font of the tray and clean it. I would also drop it in a cup of boiling water to shrink it up a bit as well. makes the drives work like new.
So when I order should I get a .08mm thick belt, or a 1.4mm thick belt? Which one is compatible with the Xbox? If I order a pack of Xbox 360 DVD belts will those be the right size?
As others mentioned, the belt the easiest cheapest solution. I suspect the drive in your Xbox is a Samsung. Good that its not a Thomson which though do not have sticking trays, have bad read issues. I prefer Phillips drives; there is a simple way to identify by simply ejecting the tray. Original Xbox Guide - Which Revision Console - http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=755098#p755098
I checked and my drive is Samsung. I ordered a set of replacement belts on eBay that are supposed to be Xbox compatible, so hopefully it does the trick. I'll also remove that clock capacitor while I've got the system open, because even though mine hasn't given me trouble I suspect it will leak eventually.
Apart from Okcmo Thomson and Hitachi drives, all others have two versions. You don't know the difference by just ejecting the trays. Without opening off the top of my head, Phillips versions can be told apart by hearing the laser mech working. Samsung versions VerB should have a whining noise while ejecting. Opening the Xbox you can tell by the labels below. Found the photos I had from my oooold website:
I have also added a sticker to the magnet on the Samsung Drives And that will also sometimes fix a sticky drive problem. This is good If you don't want to have to buy a new belt.
