So last night I sat down with me dad to watch Back to the Future 2. Mostly becuase of the 80s Cafe scene where Michael Jackson took your order Max Headroom style.

Given that 2015 isn't as radically far off now as it was when the Movie Came out I thought it'd be fun to look at what they thought our lives would be like

    - Holographic advertising. WELL...we aren't anywhere close to that.
    - Hover boards...nope don't see these coming anytime soon either
-Flying Cars with Nuclear reactors in the back...NOPE however the car designs weren't THAT far off from some of the Scions I've seen.
-Screens in our windows that change scenery with the touch of a remote...
it's feasable but who in the hell would want it?
-Food Hydrators... I don't think this is either feasable nor something we even want.
    - Fax Machines all over the house... Yeah Fax machines died out awhile ago.
    - Flat screen TVS...HOLY SHIT they predicted something correctly and look what this thing can do, Video Chat... Hey we can do that now and given that some TVs are starting to come with eithernet ports that's looking quite feasable, Also I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that in 6 years we'll be talking to our TVs to change the channel.
    - That card reader was way oversized (if you remember the scene)

As Far as fashon, unless Cyber punk becomes Chic in the next few years I doubt that'll be the style and I don't see the double necktie EVER being in style.

Another thing they had in movie that we have no are signboard hats...those I think you can get.

We still have 6 years until the setting of Back to the future 2 so it should be interesting to see what happens between now and then and how many fans of the movie try to make it's tech a reality.

Another thing of note when Marty Plays Wildgun man the kids excalim

"You use your hands that's a baby's toy"

hmm does Natal exist in this future?

As far as technology goes, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I've thought about the "future technology" stuff in BttF 2 many times actually.. I don't think Mr. Fusion, weather control or flying cars are coming in the near future, but I'm annoyed about still having to tie my shoelaces.

I think with most of the shown stuff in the movie (hover boards, food hydrator, holographic advertising) they just wanted to mock the future because you can't predict it precisely anyway.

    On another note:
I really like some of the visions people had about the future in the '60s

I think it was pretty obvious they were mocking far-fetched "views of the future" like the ones from the 60s you mentioned. I doubt they really thought weather control for example was ever going to be possible, but then again, why don't we have automatic shoelaces? They seem perfectly plausible!

The future scenes were always my favorites in the entire movie, because the future looked really awesome and realistic at the same time. Some say there's too much product placement, but I say it just adds to the realism of those scenes.

...now blade runner.... (haven't seen so I can't comment)

They got that DOWN that's for sure.

and hey 1985 was nothing like the book (though some argue that's happening now...nope still don't see it)

    Oh I just found this

The best thing about Blade Runner's prediction of the future? The huge neon Atari billboard prominently seen in at least one scene. Not quite how the future worked out. What's ironic is that Blade Runner came out in 1982, only a year before the big crash!

(I know, there are other ads for companies that failed in the movie, but the Atari billboard is the one that stuck in my mind)

Ministry of Truth bureaucrat Marty McFly travels with Doc to the future in this classic tale warning of the dangers of Fascism and Communism.

I just recalled the 1984 motion film (the latest one, made in the 80's)..I feel Marty would have been depressed in that scenery :110:

I guess you haven't seen 2001: Space Odyssey.

The only ones who were smart enough to not give an specific date when talking about the future were the guys from Capcom in the MegaMan games, the games usually took place in the year 200X or 20XX.

Are we living 1984? No. Now if you read A Brave New World you may come just a bit closer to the world we live in.

some things became already true, some things will possibly never come true (not in the next 6 years and also not in 600 of) and again other things are already far superior developed as seen there (mainly based on callulating powers of present computers). ok, we still play games with our hands. what a baby tool.

-we have flat screens now -> right
-we have indeed also transparent navigation elemenets in car windows (not used in consumer ware yet, but the technology is here and quite fully developed) -> right
-flying cars wouln'd be the biggest issue in near future. probably not on that hoover board technologym but in other ways.
but the queston here is more, who's gonna ride them? would you give all the peeps which are driving normal cars now the permission to fly cars trough the airs? LOL, tremendous traffic accidents rate would increase by 100%. who will take the responsibility? how many peeps can fly a simple cesna nowadays? even they exist since many decades now?
thats the biggest hurdle i guess.
    -hoover boards -> no way
-lifting and organ transplant is no big news now -> right

and the biggest thing which probably never will come true, is the time machine itself. and that wasn't even a future thing in there ;)

BTW. i'm a HUGE BttF fan and watch the trilogy regulary once a year

Actually I wouldn't doubt that all of these things are possible, and we'll probably see at least a few of them within the next 100 years. Of them all, I'd guess we'd have time travel first, even before flying cars. In fact I'm going to go out on a limb and say we'll have time travel within 40 years, quite possible with the advancements that are being made every year in computing power, particle physics, superstring cosmology, and everything else. In fact, chances are someone will come up with the mathematics for it before a sufficient power source needed in order to achieve it is invented.

Antigravity, I estimate 20 years or less, but probably more than that for it to become widely used. We already have charged particles being used to help propel the Stealth Bomber, it's only a matter of time before such a craft is invented that relies soley on that type of pulpulsion. Chances are it would end up a military secret for a number of years.

Holograms, we already have them. They can already make projected holograms, just not to the degree seen in the movie. I give this one less than ten years, until there is some form or holographic advertising. Actually I believe we'll probably see some kind of game console that uses holograms one day. How long until we have Star Trek style holodecks? Maybe 100 years.

Laces that tie themselves, go ahead and make them. I woudn't mind having that, or a jacket that dries itself.

Flying cars? I highly doubt we'd ever have those. Getting a driver's liscense would be impossible, you'd have to be trained to the jet fighter standard. I could see cars that float a few inches off the ground though eventually, like Luke Skywalker's sand speeder.
