I promised a while ago that I would take some pics of my FZ-21S1 unit. I finally came around to it today. So I took it out of the fireproof safe and vacuum sealed bag for a photo shoot. Anyone can use these pics for video game literature.

    Awesome pics! Thanks for sharing.

I was always curious to see if your unit was the one that had pictures taken of it some years back, and it does appear to be the same unit in most respects.

I can't tell for sure in the pictures, but are the Power and Open buttons the same color? In the picture it looks as though the Power button is more similar in color to the drive lid.

Awesome pictures, i've always wanted to see inside of one of these.

Is it true that these units are just CD drives? There seems to be a lot of circuitry in there just for a CD controller.

You are thinking about the FZ-DR21 pictured below.
They are somewhat similar in appearance.

Ah I see, so the unit RPA is showing can be hooked up to a TV and play what few games are out there? Or does it have to be linked to a DEV unit?

I hope it's the former, being able to have one sitting under a TV (for a short time protected by Ninjas) would be one hell of a display piece.

The Power and Open buttons are different colors. The Open button is blue and the Power button is a little darker than the lid. It's actually the same color as the bottom of the unit.

I agree with this being the same unit seen on the internet. About six years ago I knew a guy on Atari Age who had the handle of justice_is_blind. He PM'd me a couple of pics and some info about his unit. I was so jealous at the time and I never thought I would own it but after comparing his pics and mine I would definitely say they are the same.

Have you seen these pics before?

This is a standalone unit. I'm not 100% sure if it works or not though because I don't have a BIOS loader so it won't even boot. It plugs into the back and looks like a PCMCIA card. If anyone can help me make or obtain one I would really appreciate it!

Yes, I knew of justice_is_blind. He used the handle Zangardo on other boards, including this one.

Yes I've seen those. I've got a bunch more archived too. In fact, you can still see most of them up on the board I originally got them from.

    This is interesting.
In the grouping of pictures that I have the unit has a circuit board that appears to be IDENTICAL to yours.
The handwriting (in both places) on IC100 looks identical - same placement, same size, same color, same everything.
The rework wire between the PPC 602's is identical in size, color, shape, bends, glue locations, etc., etc.,...
The points where hand-soldering was performed look the same with excess flux on the board, solder balls, etc.
The tape on the SRAM battery appears the same.

The only thing that doesn't look the same in the pictures I have is the Power button appears to be almost the same shade of blue as the Open button, whereas your unit has two different colored buttons.
I suppose the pictures I have are of two different FZ-21S1's, with some of the pictures showing your circuit board out of the chassis and a few other pictures mixed in of a different unit that possesses the two blue buttons.

I need to look through some of my older pictures to verify some of this.

I've been wondering, what does CDE stand for?

    Splendid photos BTW.
