Just finished of a Game Boy Color fronlight screen mod today, I used LOCA and a Hand Held Legend frontlight. However, I kept wondering how come a Game Boy Color backlit screen isn't produced? There is one for the first Game Boy Advance, and there even is a clone system of the Game Boy Color, called GB Boy which uses a backlit screen. Is there any particular reason why it isn't being produced? I would think that it would sell quite well, but maybe there is some sort of technical obstruction? Here is a picture of the frontlight I did today: A bit washed out, but at the moment it doesn't come any better than this
I think that if the demand was there, they would be produced. The best way to play GB and GBC games is on the GBA SP and that already has a frontlight or backlight, so most people use that.
Yea, that is usually the way I go about myself. However, I would think that the Demand is there, since the frontlight kits, and the GB Boy Color sells pretty good. I personally like the Game Boy Advance SP, but when I have a Color in my hands it just throws me back to my childhood
Sadly, you can't put a backlit screen in the GBC. It is a technical problem. I hope somebody can remedy this.
I doubt there is enough demand to design and manufacture a replacement screen that features a backlight. I wish there was but I think the investment in such a product would never pay off. A drop in replacement with a backlight would be a dream.
I would buy one instantly, it would be so awesome. Perhaps the likes of Hand Held Legend or similar, can explain why it isn't possible. I would love to see that, can you post a link so I could see it ?
I never had GBC but did some reading and I'd like to add one to my collection at some point. The GBA SP hurts my hands, its too narrow and after a while my hands begin to cramp, that's why a few years back I contacted guy in China and ordered like 5 screens and cables for the GBA and installed them for myself and a few friends. Gives me the chance for a fully backlit awesome look without causing me to have cramped up old man hands.
I think it's more feasible to develop a Video out device rather than a LCD (which would need the same work anyway).. For frontlight, I wonder if you could change the stock LCD contrast or add a polariser
Those front light kits are pretty crappy. If they made them like the lights in the front lit SP, or in the GBA afterburner kit (with the parallel ridges instead of lots of tiny bumps), it'd look a hell of a lot better. And you wouldn't need to mess around with loca. I remember a number of years ago (years before these new kits started appearing) some people were selling modded GBCs with lights similar to the ones in the afterburner kit. I wonder where they got the materials to do it. I've tried looking around but I've never been able to find anything.
People are already working on a GBA video-out. It's a German forum, so you'd have to translate to read: http://circuit-board.de/forum/index...-Consolizing-GBA-ES/?postID=447503#post447503
Perhaps it would be a great kickstarter project? I do own a Gameboy color with both the Gameboy Advance SP frontlight, and one with a Hand Held Legend frontlight, and there is no doubt that the frontlight panel with LOCA is the best, in my opinion Is this a similar device? http://retrorgb.com/gbatv.html
No, that's an add-on that outputs 480i at NTSC refresh rates. The one I just linked to will be more like a consolized GBA that outputs at least 240p, possibly more.
No, I was using Zerey Zhang which who unless I'm mistaken doesn't sell anymore. Its been 3 years or so since I contacted him.
Wouldn't a backlight Game Boy Color LCD be a great kickstarter project? I personally don't have the technical knowhow, or how to get an LCD in production but I could try to contact a couple of people who might have.
