The place I am currently working is having a gamerthon week, where there are many competitions to find out the best 'gamer' (i use it in lower case and in quotes for a reason...). So far yesterday, there was two competitions a Fifa 08 and a Dead or Alive 4 (or just Dead or Alive according to all the gumpf...), FIFA 08 is okay (prefer WE series though) but they were running on PC which seemed odd and DOA4 is no Virtua Fighter 5 and is too broken, I did play the winner in a single game and did manage to beat him, ho hum... Rest of the week is Call of Duty something or other, Halo 3 and Guitar Hero. So all of them very much games aimed at the teen to under 25 year old male market and the sponsor booths very much show this with lots of idiotic looking PCs with cold cathode tubes, lights, nitrogen fan cooling and a blantent disregard for global warming. In fact there is going to be something called the Gigabyte world overclocking championship, where lots of fairly geeky looking people (and you can play spot the female and spend ages doing so...) try to overclock a CPU to run a few Mhz faster. There is even going to be a public GH3 and Grand Turismo 5 Prologue competition but despite having a nice large TV, a great Yamaha surround sound system, they insult me by giving me a PS3 pad and asking me to set a fast time on that... if you are going to show all this expensive equipment then at least send a little bit more getting at least a decent Logitech steering wheel... On another note... The best gaming competition I was in was a Puyo Puyo Tsu one in a Japanese arcade recently, where I got my arse handed to me by some 20 something woman who got an amazing combo before I got mine.. twice...
It's not the best "gamer" competetion, it's the best gamer at that particular Game. If i kick your ass at guitar hero, you suck at guitar hero. nuff said. i'm better at it. replace the words guitar hero with any game, and that sums it up. thats like saying saying a football player thats good is the king of all athletes. no. A "overall" gaming competetion is held at PAX, arguably one of the biggest Game Expo's in the US every year. I suggest you look it up.
