It there a way to region free the PAL gamecube using either switches or switchless like the USA GC, or is it just a case of popping in a Mod Chip to get region free

You can't add a region switch like on Japanese/US machines. Easiest way is to get a Xeno - either wireless or a 6 wire install on the DVD drive board and it'll read anything you throw at it.

Might be better to import/pick up any NTSC gamecube (NTSC-J or NTSC-U) if you want the best compatibility with games (especially Japanese games).

Zeno really is for backup and as I now know import disk play. But that doesn't give the 60htz I was hoping for. I think the best option is import a USA model, region free it and then add the mod chip for pal games

Putting an ntsc game in gives you 60hz..

The jap thing is only an issue if you can read Japanese and do t want the font screwed up. Otherwise there is no reason to get an ntsc console. Not only that, a PAL cube can use the cheaper rgb cable. An ntsc cube needs a digital component cable.

Ok cool. Wasn't keen on buying another GC, considering I got 3 pal already

A few games like Radirgy can't save progress in English mode, beyond font issues.

You'll still have to play 50hz only games with the pal GC. 50hz on NTSC needs component to look right.

There are many games that support 60hz in PAL, on some like Resident Evil you need to hold b during boot for the menu selection to show

Swiss or qoob can force 480p. PAL compatibility is more documented. My jap and usa list only contains games I own, no results submitted yet.
