It would appear that a developer, Jonatan Söderström from CactusQuid, is offering support to those who download his game, Hotline Miami, on The Pirate Bay. http://torrentfreak.com/games-developer-gives-customer-support-to-pirate-bay-downloaders-121026/ Naturally, he encourages those who like it to buy it, but understands that people can't always afford to do so. Is this a new approach from the gaming industry that will take off? Probably not. Still, it's interesting if it really is him!
this also helps publicise the game but i suppose the logic is there if someone trys it and likes it maybe they'll be more likely to cough up some cash for it, same with music just my opinion tho
So this game is actually good? All the videos make it look like yet another shitty fake 8-bit game. And how much of an entitled little shit do you have to be to pirate an indie game? (unless it's And Yet It Moves or Bit.Trip.Runner)
I think it's a nice approach, and hope it works for him. Unfortunately I don't see this taking off as standard any time soon...
It's an old story - when developers/authors share their stuff for free. Like musicians have their albums available on their sites even in lossless formats. Nothing new really. And while some companies add DRM which is way too strict and buggy so it makes installing pirate copy a preferable method to play the game, others release completely DRM-free games.
The guy who made minecraft has said much the same thing. Pretty sure he was quoted saying something along the lines of "if you can't afford to buy it, pirate it at then pay for it when you can"
But honestly, if you can't afford to pay for a cheap indie game, maybe you should switch to a cheaper hobby, like bottlecap collecting.
he knows this will give him free marketing and indie cred. there's no chance to stop the piracy of his game so why not try to pretend to like it instead of arguing? this is nothing new either. just another shitty poser indie doing what's already been done too many times since -- you guessed -- this indie rubbish became the standard human behavior by most of the population. so tired of their awfully generic 8-bit puzzle platformers acting as if the second coming of jesus fucking christ. also, cheap and greedy bastards who can't even pay for a product should piss off.
It's a great approach to get your name out there. People don't hunt down small-scale economy PC games, but if you announce that you're giving it out for free (which, chances are, it will end up going there anyway), it changes things a good deal!
