Game Developer's Conference - any interested?

Discussion in 'Off Topic Discussion' started by Greatsaintlouis, Dec 14, 2004.

  1. While I'm not sure if I can go this year (thanks to them putting it right before finals week, instead of spring break like last year), I'm considering attending the Game Developer's Conference down in San Francisco March 7-11. They apparently have a student discount rate of $50 at the door, which gets you into the expo part of the show (3 days, not sure when) and gives you access to a few of the presentations. I'm not sure if they are even still having the student discount thing, as I can't find any information on the website for this year, but I'll try calling tomorrow.

That being said, are there any other members (obviously those in the southern California area, unless others want to take a big roadtrip) that would be interested in meeting up, splitting the cost of a hotel room or something? I'm not even sure if I can go, as I said, which is why I want to plan early in case things fall through.

I'd go since it's 30 minutes away, but I have school on most of the days. :smt009 I may be able to make it up on Thursday or Friday afternoon.

STudent addmission is for a good ticket that will get you to 80% of the presentations done by the big boys will cost you $950 after the $50 discount.

IGDA.org has a scholarship which I think is almost too late to enter. You have to be a student member btw which is $35 in order to enter into the scholarship. The scholarship awards the student FULL addmission to the GDC, up to 25 ppl can win but it doesnt cover traveling costs but I think they help with room/board, not sure. Check out there website to enter. I might just do that too.

  4. They had some thing last year where, again, you got 3 days of the expo and got to go to a few or so of the presentations - $50 at the door with student ID. Had a friend that made it, but I was off with my family for break.

It would be utterly ridiculous if they changed it to $950 to get in, as though that's some sort of deal students can afford.

I'd love to go but there's always the topological discrepancy :smt067

As always, pricing details are on the site (click)

    It lists the following:

Which reminds me. I have to renew my membership with them.

  8. I dunno, I'm either not being clear enough, or we're having communication problems, so I'll try this again.

LAST year, there was a STUDENT discounted special of $50 for the THREE DAY EXPO plus SOMETHING LIKE 5 WORKSHOPS OR PRESENTATIONS - you had to pay AT THE DOOR and show your STUDENT ID.

    Nothing about IGDA membership.

    It wasn't a $50 discount, either.

It was a $50 STUDENT RATE, which does not show on the website this year - as I've said twice now, which is why I made the comment that it would be rather stupid if they decided not to have it.

    Let's read a bit, people.

GSL is right they do have that event where its 3days but they dont let you in to the lectures, just walk around the booths, nothing that special.

  10. Ever feel like people just flat-out ignore what you say? :smt009

    See above.

    STUDENT PACKAGE.

EXPO + LECTURES/WORKSHOPS (5 or so, pre-selected by the organizers).

    FROM LAST YEAR.

OUTLOOK NOT GOOD ON THIS YEAR - NO INFO ON WEBSITE.

GSL, I know they did. Looks like you're out of luck this year.

BUT - read what *I* said.

They are doing limited FREE passes for students in advance.

Now personally, as a poor student, I would have rather had a free pass in advance than hope I could get in on the door in advance.

So, rather than complaining to us about it, go book your free pass! GOGOGO!!! :smt023

The 3day pass thingy is $150 if you go to GDC's site.
