Game Gear backlight flickers with SMS converter

I recently bought a "Gear Master" converter which is supposed to allow you to play SMS games on a GG. However, when it is used, the screen (I think it's the backlight) visibly flickers. It works fine with normal games.

Is there anything that would fix this - I was thinking about an LED mod?
