I recently acquired a broken game gear that works fine minus a busted screen. I want to build a console out of it with a donor genesis 2 shell. I already have one of Tim Worthington's ggtv boards that I plan on using for this (it's in another game gear atm). What I plan on doing is using a master system cart slot and build a reverse master gear adapter into an sms cart to play game gear games. This should be possible considering its passive, right? I've read about using the master everdrive to load game gear roms through a modified master gear adapter (meaning with a switch installed to put it into game gear mode after loading a game) so it should be possible to make an adapter that does the same thing right? I was thinking of just installing 2 slots, but I think this will look nicer. Also, do 3rd party genesis extension cables typically have all 9 pins populated? I know the controller cables don't. I want to use the game gear shell to make a controller for the system, and it would be easy to make the start button work if the cable has all the pins. I want to maintain compatability with sms controllers for playing sms games.
Hi, There's a good topic on Sega16 : http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showth...old-dirty-broken-Game-Gear-found-in-the-trash , MaxWar used a Master Converter and made 2 slots. Maybe you'll find answers there. The Game Gear and Master System seems to be pin-to-pin compatible. Here's the pin out : http://www.smspower.org/maxim/Documents/Pinouts .
This guy did a fantastic job on creating a Game Gear console (japanese site): http://www.lcv.ne.jp/~mgs1987/sega/gg2.html I hope this can help you!
I actually answered my own questions. I happened to find an official Sega branded controller extension cable, and all 9 pins are populated. I suppose if it came down to it, I could just find an old PC serial cable online that would have all 9 pins connected. I've been using that second site as a reference for building the reverse Master Gear adapter. I've seen that before, and it looks awesome. The only issue I have with it is the crazy looking tower you get when you want to use Mark III/Master System games. I think a GG to SMS adapter would look much less odd, so I'm gonna have a 50-pin card edge socket in the system that connects to the Game Gear board, which will act like a permanent Master Gear adapter, and then make a reverse adapter cartridge that I'll plug GG games into. I'm also going to wire the controller 2 port in the genesis to the link port for 2 player SMS games, but I'll leave the link port probably in the back so 2-player GG games would still be possible without needing all kinds of adapters.
