So my Game Gear has been tucked away for at least 2 years and I decided to play it again. But when I turned it on, the screen was just black, except for a white spot near the top of the screen. The game loaded and was working, but I could ONLY SEE it if I rotated the Game Gear up and looked at it from the bottom edge. The contrast slider did nothing, neither did the volume slider. Although there was virtually no sound, you could still hear it if you put your ear up to the speaker. So what happened? Is my Game Gear just broken somehow? I know that they're known for breaking after a while.

The dark screen is caused by capacitors going bad and the same thing with the low sound. All Game Gear capacitors have gone bad by now and all my Game Gears have had to have all the capacitors replaced lately. You can buy cap kits on ebay and solder them in yourself or sent it away for someone to do it for you. I imagine the white spot could be a dead pixel.

you could also track down a Majesco gamegear, they used better caps than the sega produced ones
