I just came across this on YouTube. The guy in the video claims that the Retron5 3-in-1 not only works on a Mega Drive, it even allows you to play Game Gear cartridges on the Mega Drive. He says there are some issues with the colours though. I have no reason to doubt this adapter playing Master System games on the MD, but playing Game Gear games on it sounds too good to be true. Can anyone else confirm the claims in this video or is it a fake?

You can run Game Gear roms that have been altered to be more like SMS roms on the MegaDrive. There is a site with a bunch of patches to try to fix some of the issues that occur. So if that does work, you'll have issues that need patching or you'll just have to ignore those issues as you play. The MegaDrive stock will not play Game Gear games properly. Just not possible, the hardware isn't the same.

That's true for a real MD, but then again, we're talking Retron, which is just an emulation box. The systems mentioned (SG1000/MS/MD/GG) are similar enough to probably all be handled by the same emulator, so it's possible that it simply switches into the correct mode when it recognizes the ROM to be a GG one.

I've run some Game Gear games on my Everdrive such as Gunstar Heroes. It ran but had a lot of glitching around the play area plus I couldn't jump. GG Shinobi also started but crashed once start was pressed. I'm sure there are some GG games that would run on a stock Mega Drive via the EverDrive such as the Master System Ports.

"SEGA Hu cards" made me laugh. He surely meant "SEGA My cards".

Basically, a GG is a SMS with some "customizations" added for making a better portable experience:

-Link port (instead of second joystick port)
    -Start button
-Hardware mod that makes the sound chip stereo capable
-4096 color palette register on the video chip for taking advantage of the LCD screen capabilities

There may be a couple GG games that were programmed to detect being run on a SMS, will not require a start button, will use monaural sound and will have correct palettes. But very few games do that.

Most are hard coded for the GG and require conversion. SMS Power has a long, ongoing thread on that subject at it's development forum.
