game genie code for Revenge of Shinobi and Golden Axe result in red screen when you start game. Any idea on why? Game without code works ok. I was able to get game genie code to work on some other games, such as Shinobi 3 and Splatterhouse 2&3. thanks
Both of these games have several different revisions of the same ROM, using codes designed for the wrong revision will result in them either not working or causing a possible red checksum crash screen like your seeing.
For Golden Axe you need to use a master game genie code: ETFT AA9T Then, you load the other codes beneath it. But the master code must be loaded first. I actually read somewhere that it's because sega put cheat detection in Golden Axe. You need to disable the self check in most of these sega games Maybe the same code will work with shinobi, but I doubt it. You might have to hack it yourself. This is what I did for Golden Axe: This enabled me to bypass the checksum EDIT: Actually when I get the time, i'd like to put together a list of sega games that have cheat detection, and then list a master code to bypass it's self check
ok the Golden Axe rom I have must not be the same as the one you have I goto that hex address and see different values. I have mac, hex editor, and rom. But if the game genie code not right, how do I find right code? Also what is best game genie to hex program out there. I run windows in virtual machine, so ok if windows only. I also have linux pc if easier. thanks
I'm just using the 'world' edition of Golden Axe (goodgen code: (W)[!]) For the tool I used, go here: http://www.angelfire.com/games2/codehut/Download.htm Download the ggconv.zip file and use that tool to convert. It's odd though that the master code above doesn't work for you, if you're using the 'World' edition that is? EDIT: I learned how to hack gg codes with this document: http://www.angelfire.com/games2/codehut/ImprovedMasterCodes.txt You'll also find a lot of useful info here: http://www.angelfire.com/games2/codehut/Sega.htm (scroll to the bottom to see the technical how to docs)
thanks for the solution. I had to use a different rom. Only hard part now is understanding what rom files work with what game genie codes. Trial and error so far.
I've been hacking more games, SMS and Genesis for Genesis you either have to disable checksum validation or change the checksum after you hack the ROM. I found the utility below very helpful. This way you won't get red screen after you hack the rom. ESE FixCheckSum http://segaretro.org/Checksum
That's excellent! Thanks for sharing that. So what's the process you've been following? ie. Fixing the checksum on the rom first, then adding the game genie code manually on the ED? Or, are you doing rom hard coding of the GG cheats then fixing the checksum?
I add gg code(s) using gg to hex converter and hex editor. Then use that utility to fix the checksum. So far so good.
