Hi everyone. I have a question about the gameboy advance Action Replay Max. I have been looking around the net at some of these gameboy flash things that you can put emulators and such on. I would like to use a NES emulator on my GBA but I dont have one of those flash cards. So my question is, is there any way to convert the ARmax to do this. It already has USB hook up and you can write codes to it so I dont see why it wouldnt work. I realize this may not be the best place to ask but I dont know of anywhere else really. If anyone knows that would be great or if anyone could link me to a site or a guide that would work well to. I have searched yahoo and google but havent really found anything yet. Thanks!
Technically, you _could_ re-flash the BIOS to run some (smaller-size) GBA ROMs, but there are problems: 1) it overwrites the ARMax BIOS, so you can't use it anymore. 2) does anybody know the protocol for flashing the entire ARMax flash BIOS from software? I don't think so...
well I dont really mind losing the AR's functionality. I found a site that deals with GBA Flash cards and I downloaded some software for putting games on the card and the drivers. I tryed to force the AR to use the drivers but it kept saying the file didnt contain info on my device. So yes I think you are right in the fact I would have to flash the bios. Does anyone know if I would need a special bios ( I should think I would) or just some generic one to turn it into a flash card (blank?) Also does anyone have info on how to flash it, or does anyone have any ideas how to do so. Right now I have the AR drivers installed and the only way to access the ar is through the AR software. It hooks to the PC via firewire to usb. If theres anyway I could do this that would be great. maybe a generic guide to flashing a GBA cart would work if anyone knows of any???
Those are quite pricy to be able to play nes games on the go. Im sure theres a way to flash it. Does anyone have a guide to flashing a stanard GBA game? I think it would be the same since the AR is really a GBA Game.
I don't think flashing the AR Max is possible. The actual AR program is stored on a ROM chip, which can't be flashed. You'd be better of using a multiboot cable.
What is a multiboot cable??? Never heard of one before. Also do you think the bios is on a removable chip. If so I could pop it out and try to get it flashed. But to do that I would need a flashcart bios to put on it. Yeah, I have been looking at PSP's but im waiting on them to: a) get a little cheaper b) power stone comes out
Even if you remove the ROM chip, it's still a ROM chip and thus can't be flashed. A multiboot cable is a cable that connects your PC's parallel port woth the GBA's link port. You know when you play a multiplayer game with only one cartridge? The GBA with the cart sends the program through the link port to the other GBAs. With a multiboot cable, you can do the same. Send small GBA applications from your PC to your GBA. Since you only want to play NES games, a multiboot cable will do. Check this for more info: http://www.devrs.com/gba/files/mbv2faqs.php
Wow, that sounds sweet. However does it just write to the ram and thus the data will be lost if the GBA is shut down. I really dont much like the idea of having to use the cable each time I want to play nes on my gameboy. The whole point of this is so I can take it with me, and its not going to last long if I cant turn it off. Also could I use this cable to possably overwrite a GBA game with another. For instance say I have a 2 dollar copy of some crap game I bought, could I hook up the cable and write the nes emulator over top of the game??? Thanks for the help man, I really appriacte it!
The cable only writes to the RAM, so each time you turn off your GBA, everything will be lost. Since you don't want a flash cartridge, that's the only other option. You can't rewrite/reflash any GBA game, expect for flash cartridges. They all use ROM chips, and ROM chips can't be rewritten/reflashed at all.
