If it did get released (which I'm pretty sure it didn't) it would be completely useless now, except as a collector's item.
of course those were released and not to less. the same exist(ed) also for wonderswan etc. nowadays ou can grap those items for 100yen (1dollar) in the hardoffs junk corner.
Came in 3 versions too one for each of the 3 main networks, i wanted one badly to unlock the secrets in pocket monsters crystal, but it was futile as they dont work outside of japan. Only a tiny amount of games worked with it too.
Sega also had something similar planed for connecting the Dreamcast VMU to a phone so that you could transfer data to another user anywhere in Japan. The system was never released though. Yakumo
In the pic in the first post, the game playing is Pocket Monsters Crystal. It used the mobile phone link to let people battle and trade Pokémon. It looks like most of it was done via HTTP and SMTP, and the server was located at gameboy.datacenter.ne.jp. The system has since been shut down, making the devices now useless even in Japan. The English version of Pokémon Crystal was supposed to use it too, but the features were stripped out before release, supposedly because at the time cell phones were not very common in America (certainly not as common as in Japan), and there was less standardization. The English version still has a lot of translated text from the Mobile Adapter events compiled into the ROM. Another game that used it was Mobile Golf GBC. I believe that the adapter itself came with a cartridge that let you test the device.
That very poster is included with the Japanese version of Pokemon Crystal. Apparently it was through this system you could get Celebi. Do any online stores still sell these? I've never seen them on eBay before. I know it doesn't work, but it would be a nice collectors piece.
I got the LE set with mobile golf. It was a great game like Mario Golf GB, but sad thing is you have to be online to unlock all the secrets and most of the characters and later golf courses in the game.
These were rad. I remember seeing them in Japan and wanting one, but I didn't have a JPN cell phone to use it with.
there's even a PS1 version of something similar. you use your mobile phone to download/upload data, which is in turned hooked to the second controller port if I recall. NTT DoCoMo had made quite a few similar deals - the GBC pokemon one is one of the most used I think (never lived in Japan though, so I don't know that for a fact)
You could upload track time records and ghost data for others to download. I don't think there was multiplayer.
