Is the original Gameboy the one with the best sound? Also what is the soundchip of this thing? I was surprised not to find that on Wikipedia. This page makes it clear that each GB sounds different, http://www.herbertweixelbaum.com/comparison.htm so are they all using the same chip? Also... slightly less formal question: does it really matter? I mean, with most games are you going to tell much difference with the music and sound fx coming from the tiny speakers anyway? your opinion, please . thanks
Well, as far as I remember it's part of GB cpu, called PAPU (Pseudo Audio Processing Unit). More tech info here. Hm, I was always under impression it's not a matter of chip but rather components used for sound output. But I could be wrong here For me? Not really I guess I wouldn't notice if it's not pro sound mod etc. But I don't do chiptunes. Anyways, GBC + headphones + ac adaptor = bad idea.
Capacitor quality and age will affect the sound output. Using the same sound hardware is a good base across the board but clearly they are different. Of note that page with comparisons is a comparison page with a bunch of modifications done so OF COURSE they will sound different. Besides, the speaker on all of the portable consoles leaves much to be desired. Just because the waveform is similar across the board doesn't mean the speaker's build quality won't seriously affect what you hear.
The speaker is kind of a moot point, at least as far as chiptune artists since they use the headphone port.
Well I got some gameboy games for my GBA SP today in the mail, and they sound good, so I guess it's fine. thanks for the responses y'all.
No idea. Since it was the 80s this thing came out in it likely did have better build quality than later models if not for any reason other than as revisions come down the line cheaper components get used. Not always as demonstrated in the case of the Playstation 1 and 2 which got better over time to a point. After the 11th model of PS2 it went downhill rather fast. To be honest the screen being blurry during motion combined with the lack of sharp contrast made the original Gameboy far from desirable for playing games on. For chiptunes I couldn't say but I'd bet the original would be extremely easy to interface with given the solder pads are likely a LOT larger than a Nintendo DS. In any case if anyone wanting quality audio from anything older than say 5 years doesn't replace the capacitors and expects to hear quality audio they're absolutely nuts.
i prefer the dmg pro sounded and ive compared all the models like that guy and the dmg prosounded sound the best thus the reason why chiptuners use the the original gameboy
