Hey guys! I've got a problem with my gamecube. When i use Verbatim DVD-R's the laser has this "clicking" sound and it won't play the games. I've tried adjusting the pot and cleaning the laser. This doesn't happen with original games. It will read the original games fine but it still has that sound. Any advice?
Here's my video showing the problem. (listen closely) http://youtu.be/sqxlvjETzEA

    Thanks!

It seems to me that it either doesn't like those discs you're using or it's a bad burn. I'd try using some other brand of disc before assuming it's the Gamecube. And what did that message on the screen mean?

Ok, so at what speed did you burn the ISO's and what program are you using?

For this dvd i used "Burn" on mac and the slowest write speed. I tested it with the internal "SuperDrive" on my mac and with an external blu-ray burner. I also tried burning with ImgBurn, also with the slowest burn speed, but still no change.

Ideally, 2x speed using ImgBurn. If 2x isn't available, then 4x will have to do. In the video, the first time you ran the disc, you actually got into the game, as the error message was displayed in game. So, it's either the disc or the laser. Did you use a Multimeter when adjusting the POT on the GameCube?

Check it again and if it is 170, try 150. If still no luck... either try a different branded disc or... and this is last resort... try 130 ohms. I would advise against going that low, but some times, it's the only way some gamecubes will read backups. Again, that's LAST RESORT, otherwise you risk breaking the laser.

Sounds like your pickup isn't focusing properly..
did you finalise the burns or left the disc open?
maybe check the burners book type..

theres a Thread over at gc-forever where someone else had a clicking noise with their drive , a quick search and you may be able to find it.

also i burn GC discs at X6 as it produces less C1/2 errors than X2 or X4 with my Liteon burner , so you may want to try all of those speeds and IMGburn is better than Nero for Gamecube burns so dont bother with Nero

seeing the behavior of the Lens its not quite acting right , it should move up and down the rails when the GC is attempting to read the disc.............in the video the Laser is sorta stuck trying just to read one part

as ive discovered when it does this the POT needed more tweaking , and if you do manage to get a game to boot use Metroid Prime 2 Echoes and Super Smash Bros Melee as testers ill explain below

they both are heavy on Laser movement and seeking , they put the Laser under a good workout and if both games work you've most likely got the right ohms

btw you want to run the tests for 20+ minutes each as the GC automatically lowers the POT at 15-20 mins of use , just run the games in demo mode you dont have to play them

when adjusting the POT start at 350 ohms and test if it doesnt work drop 50 ohms and test again , keep going but dont go below i think its around 130 ohms

A friend of mine had a lot of problems with Verbatim discs with GC. Only 1/100 will work. Situation with PS2 is opposite - Verbatim DVD+(-R)s work like charm even when recorded at 16x+.
Gamecube is very picky when it comes to recordable discs. That's why i use Wii for GC backups.

YES! That could be it too! I only tried Verbatim dvd-r's i'll buy some cheap dvd+r's from aldi today. It's kinda wierd because Verbatim is good quality media but i'll try and see how it goes. Another thing is: the laser seems a little tilted here's a photo http://www.fotos-hochladen.net/view/img0187hxud57kbpv.jpg

What do you mean with "try to hold it"?
