I've been offered a gamecube q in a exchange deal, apparently they made 2 versions (1 factory modified) does anyone know if they have different serial numbers ? If so which refers to which machine. cheers
Someone feel free to correct me, but as far as I'm aware there was only one version of the Panasonic Q. The confusion arises from the fact that suppliers to the west like Lik-Sang provided versions they'd modified themselves to play all DVDs and US games for a higher price than regular versions; this is also reflected in the Wikipedia article for the Q which states there were two price points, but then lists them in US dollars, which is indicative of the figures a site like Lik-Sang would post (catering to a worldwide market) rather than what they were priced at in Japan (it is unlikely that a figure in yen would convert so conveniently to $439 and $499 dollars). Basically, there's one version and it's impossible to tell if a console is modified from external appearances. It would be far more likely for it to have been modified it the remote has an English label on it, but not a given.
Thanks for that, seen a couple over the years that have had a English overlay on the remote so sounds like i adds up to a external mod. humm I guessing it would be hard to mod these days if it wasn't already done.
The Gamecube board is pretty much the same, so they can be chipped to play backups and imports, but it's near impossible to find information on making the DVD player region free these days. These guys used to have the information online and offered the mod.
Cheers for that link, it's only the GC side of things I would be using though, if it be chipped to play NTSC and pal I would need to buying NTSC duplicates.
