Did this thing ever come out? I'm sure it wasn't released in America, but maybe elsewhere?

I remember waiting for it, the only reason I bought the dinky gray memory cards at launch was it was the only solution. Some odd months later there are the black ones released that hold like 4 times as much, and then a year or so later the white memory cards that hold even more.

Did the quick advancements in standard memory card storage capabilities hinder this from release?

I'm a little vague on this, so take with a pinch of salt - it came out in Japan, and couldn't be used as a memory card in the normal way. I have a feeling Animal Crossing was the only game that supported it.

It came out in Japan, mail-order-only from Nintendo:
    http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/acce/index.html
    (second-to-last on that page)

Apparently you could get up to 512MB on there, compared to 64MB for the 1019 memory card. But by the time I'd ever heard of this, it was impossible to get one.

EDIT: and of course like 10 people beat me to it XD :p
EDIT2: yeah, the PDF manual says that only games marked "SD Card Adapter Compatible" can work with it.
EDIT3: as long as I'm editing up a storm, it seems that "Pokemon Channel" and "Animal Crossing e+" were the 2 compatible games.

The picture you see is of a cloned SD adapter. The official Nintendo SD adapter is longer and loads into the side so the card cannot be removed while plugged in.

The SD card can not be used as a memory card for saving games so it doesn't replace your memory card 59s or whatever you have. As graphique said only a few games worked with it. However homebrew users were the main users of the SD adapter as it made it much easier to load homebrew onto the system. Action Replay + SDLOAD was a major break through for homebrew use.

I remember seeing it on Lik-Sang and wanting to buy it but actually never did. But yes, it was released in Japan at least.

how is it a clone when the video is from nintendo's pre gamecube release? I'm pretty sure the reason it's different than the final release version you're talking about is because of a design change before production.

Little known fact: the GC was supposed to use standard SD media instead of the custom memory card we got. This accessory was shown in various forms since the first public appearance of the GameCube.

It was delayed but later released only in Japan and compatible with games such as Dobotsu No Mori Plus or something like that and a patched version of Phantasy Star Online Episode I&II, which included many of the online stuff on the disc, such as the Nights GBA minigame, amongst other things.

oh and keep this in mind:

The SD card is not a substitute for the standard Memory Card. It's used as a peripheral for PC-related interactions, such as pictures, music, etc. You can't use it with save files and it won't appear in the Memory Card Manager. ha.

Interesting, do you happen to know what the functionality with Phantasy Star Online - Episodes I & II Plus would have been?

i think the photo mode of Smash Melee was intended for use with this originally, just like the photomode in brawl.

Haha I used one of those things back in the day to create a Gamecube test (with the BBA of course).
