H guys just bought myself a viper extreme from kiff many thanks to him for it. I've installed everything correctly and when i boot up the gamecube now it comes up with the viper screen to program the chip from dvd-r or usb. Ive connected the USB to my PC which it detects but can't get drivers for it as i'm using windows 8 and its a new custom built machine so no access to an older type pc. Is there anywhere where i can get the dvd-r disk to get this chip working or files and burn myself and what format? any help would be great thanks.

I have the original Viper and I would update mine by burning the firmware file to a dvd (.vgc extension if I'm not mistaken), at the time I used Nero and data dvd option, from there you load the disc on the GC, select disc explorer option and run the file. This was a long time ago, hopefully someone else can confirm

I also suggest using a full size dvd for this, no point in wasting a mini-dvd. Just remove the top Gamecube cover :)

I flashed mine via USB and use win 8. Make sure you run as admin etc

    Edit:

Thinking about it, that might have been a qoob. I will check.

But run admin and make sure driver signing is disabled (goto advanced boot options for windows and disable it)

    Ok for windows 8.

Get the latest FTDI driver from their website
in device manager, update driver for the viper
    select "browse manually"
select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
at the list of devices, click "have disk"
browse to where the driver you downloaded is extracted to
    select "ftdibus.inf"
from the list of devices, select "USB Serial Port"

    driver now installed.

You might need to use the older flashing software, until you have updated (then you can use latest one for reflashing etc)

Right I've gone through that step by step installed drivers for USB serial port but the viper flashing programme still does not recognise the GameCube says not found viper. I've downloaded earlier programme still does not recognise it. Surely there has to be a way of flashing through DVD-r or it looks like I'm gonna have to invest in a old pc with win xp damn thing is driving me nuts!

I did all the steps above and connected to the chip with windows 8 x64.

You need to make sure the console is on iirc

It's possible that the gamecube doesn't like your media, it's quite picky. You might need to adjust the pot- will need a multimeter.
I have had success with Ritek G05 if I remember correctly

I think plug in the usb cable to your comp and install the Driver in Device Manager.
