So, like, back in the day it was the magazine Die Hard Game Fan that turned me on to the wonders of the PC Engine (they has a sidebar that said the digital comic Aim for the Top! Gunbuster had boobs in it... I was hooked). In fact in the 90's it was the go-to magazine for me and my friends. We were quite the magazine snobs, making fun of kids that would even think to get their opinions from somewhere else. We especially singled out readers of GamePro. I can remember when I went into an EB games and found the issue announcing that it was over... DHGF was ending its run. That was the day I really stopped reading english language gaming mags and just stuck to Japanese titles (when I could get them... NCS was just about all we had those days). SIDE NOTE: What it DHGF that ran an article that didn't have the filler text removed so the entire thing consisted of the phrase Damn those crazy Japanese bastards; what are they smoking, anyway? Wish I had some.repeated over and over and had to be pulled? My friend managed to get a copy of it. That was great. I was beyond shocked and pleased when, in the middle of nowhere, Kansas, I found issue 6 of Game Fan Magazine, a new iteration of the magazine of yore, and was quick to buy a copy. Love the heavy emphasis on retro stuff. But why is it that the new GFM has a cover price of $6.99 retail, yet costs $9.99 if I buy it direct from the publisher? Aren't things suppose to cost less when you buy direct because you no longer have to factor in shipping cost, the distributor's cut, and the retailer's cut? Between this and the price of House on iTunes I feel like I'm living in the Bizarro universe Incidentally, I'd be more likely to partner the Game Girls Go! project with the Game Fan website just out of pure good will and nostalgia... but I have reservations whether they'll even be around in 6 months...
I used to love Die hard Game fan. In the UK it was one of the very few American Import mags worth reading. No, wait, it was the only one worth reading. Game Pro was a kiddy feast and EGM were so far up their own arse and full of shit. A bit like the UK Edge magazine Anyway, it was a sad day when Die hard Game Fan closed it's doors. It was the best look in to Japanese gaming we had in the west. Well, apart from the UK Super Play magazine but that only covered Super Famicom stuff. Again a fantastic mag. Yakumo
I bet back in the time it was an amazing place. Saying that, I always thought their prices were way too much. They used to have an add on the back page or was it back cover for their store every month, didn't they? Yakumo
