Thought it would be interested to share this with you guys:

Gamer Br is a Brazilian documentary about the game scene around here. It gives voice to gamers, producers, lanhouse owners, journalists, psychologists, anthropologists, politicians, government representatives and game enthusiasts about questions as professional gaming, market, 'addiction', piracy, policies of incentive, censorship and the so discussed 'violence' in games.

The file is 750mb. I'm downloading it as i post this, so i don't know it it's that good. Anyways it's worth to be watched, since it probably shows the problems we have.

All current consoles, Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, DS, PSP and GBA are sold here. But they are imported from USA. Sony of Brazil does not support it officialy. Same thing for Microsoft and Nintendo.

It's like this. You buy something overpriced, with no warranties. Plus there's no costumer service.

    Got the idea?

Yea i kno, im in argentina :smt045

Now, here theres a company called GAMELA that first started as a Tectoy-alike, making cartridges andeven SEGA consoles.

Then after a wave of SEGA pirated cartridges they dropped the license and went to import nintendo. They went bankrupt and now theres a subsidiary of nintendo called Nintendo de Argentina (hoy original right?) thats has the oficial distribution of the GC, GBA and DS.

They sell at outrageous prices anyways :smt042

What piss me off is that neither argentina, brazil or chile has a legal distribution of Xbox, but mexico and even colombia have one, and even dedicated Live servers :angry

colombia? cmon! we r a bigger market! WTF......

Cool JTI2K. More South Americans here! :boobies2

So you suffer the same problems in Argentina... I'm not surprised really.

The only stuff about argentina that i know are the Master System and Mega Drive generations.

Tell us about the market in your country. (How was the PS1/SAT, How is current gen market).

PS: Xbox in Mexico i understand, being it so close to the USA. But in Colombia? WTF?

well, the market its like the 10th part that was a few years ago, mainly becos of the new laws of industry protection and the economic crisis :-(

There werent any SMS build in here, a few MK1 Genesis only, and they were goin to build a modified wondermega but (as i said before) they left SEGA for nintendo (for the piracy protection)

The 32bits were pretty cool, we got the consoles at almost the same day that in the US. The PSX distribution was in charge of Sony Argentina, but the dumbfucks let the games to another company and the games were as expensive as the console itself (120US dolars) thus making piracy the only choice. The saturn didnt catch up, and almost nobody got one. The N64 was heavily marketed by nintendo with all kind of tv ads, in the movies, in tv series, street ads, etc....

It was pretty weird, the 1st time we got such a ad campaing (and it seems that it was the last time too)

Anyways, i think we should leave the whole industrialized-country thing and start mnaking cocaine like those damn colombians :D

More like WENT to mexico, they havent been in argentina since earlys 90

It doesnt surprise me though, since by the time mexico was under the "tequila effect" :smt030 , thus makin it cheaper for industrial companies

Gamela wouldn't LET Sega - back when they were Itochu, and even before, when they were named C.Itoh - there was pretty much a nintendo monopoly until the days of the N64. In short, they've been here since they were in Argentina, but under slightly different names

And everything is still overpriced and without customer service even today, there's a fuckload of piracy, which, unfortunately, is the only way to play most of the best games (that don't sell), and a SERIOUS used-stolen market in "tianguis" and markets I liket to call "the black market".

    In chronological order:

Before the NES era - Games brought to Mexico as contraband (smuggled) - as very expensive novelties.
NES era - The same as before, but then made into a Nintendo-based monopoly with its own propaganda magazine, called "club nintendo".
Genesis / Snes era - Sega stuff trickled in.
Turbo Grafx and others pretty much didn't
1994 - NAFTA signed: one year of really cheap imports and a market boom
1995 - Mexican Economy collapses. The dollar's value doubles. We can now import the games legally but we can no longer remotely afford them.
PSX Era after 1997 - Mexican economy sort of stable - many stores, like GameXpress bring lots of new games at unaffordable prices. They seem legitimate, but they rip off customers and also evade taxes. Snes still very popular, but also PSX - because of much easier to pirate software.
1999/2000 - Legitimate software is no longer very available in the black market because of the advent of CD Burners. Dreamcast piracy is very common, but PSX is still king.
2002 to today - Lots of legitimate PS2 software, lots of Xbox piracy, Gamecube is very popular because it's cheap, SERIOUS amount of GBA piracy.

Take in mind that A LOT of tech companies copy their names from the competition. Maybe GAMELA argentina had nothing to do with mexico`s one, or Itochu.

And the reason they left SEGA was piracy. They assembled the cartridges here, and illegaly-imported pirated games were much cheaper, thus taking gamela`s market share.

And nowadays argentina seems to be just like mexico, only that you (at least) have Live ;-)

Burn it to disc and send it to retro gamer to put on their coverdisc.

They are always on the lookout for good video based disc content.

JTI2K - You can have our Xbox Live - and I'll go have some Argentinian beef and Alfajores.

    Man
    , am I hungry.

We've seen the rampant overpricing here as well - and because of this, many of the established sellers still have copies of old PSX, trying to sell with a markdown to 700 pesos from the original 1000 (that's 65 dollars, brought down from 96 dollars). And, of course, some 10 years from now, the games will finally reach a good price and will be there sealed for someone who knows what they're worth. Sort of like the "official" nintendo store near my house, that still has some Snes carts, only now they're beginning to go near the 20 dollar mark. Before that, I got some Atari 2600 carts for 11 pesos each in 1995 - left there sealed since the crash.

Today, though, we're beginning to get games close to their U.S. prices in established places. There's one GamePlanet in front of San Juan (the "Black Market") that sometimes sells below Black Market prices - and it's an official store. Wal-Mart is also cheap, of course.

Heh, Latin America is a weird place to get videogames.

Then I`ll go there for some burritos :douga

They sitll sell snes carts??! :no

Dammit, you guys are f**** up, here a game thats 50 bucks in the us may be 65-70 here (although, in better economical conditions they rip you off)

I remember some mexican guy told me that the Xbox factory is there in tijuana, and that you can get the console for less than in the us (wich made sense). It is? or M$ rip you off like nintendo?

Some firends of mine in spain tell me that games are overpriced there too, about 60 or even 70 euros for an original console game (and that happens in the rest of europe too)

And please, dont use the "L word" neither you or me speak latin ;-)
