I remember a magazine I use to read that was really cool called Gamer's Republic, it had a lot of info on games, anime, music, arcade, Japan and lots of Dreamcast info, plus it wasn't written by jackasses and looked cool. Anyhow I only picked up like 2 issues back in 5th grade and it seems to have just dissappeard. I looked it up and I can't find anything about it's demise, but I did find one thing that says that Play magazine is somewhat like it.

So, does anyone know what happened to GR, and if Play magazine is decent?

I haven't bought magazines since probably 2001 when I got an Xbox magazine, but I get PS and hardcore gamer in the mail for free, there ok. Hardcore Gamer is pretty cool since its independent, but I was thinking of getting a subscription to Play if its actually a good magazine.

PLAY magazine is good, and has alot of similarities to Gamers Republic. Unfortunatly It doesn't seem to have the best distrobution and probably won't last much more then a few years. I'd recommend picking one up if you can.

Uk gets the best magazines, print media is pretty much dead in the usa, all ads and connected to the industry's purse strings.

Yeh. THe US mags are more like full blown catalogs.

The only decent mag I see here is Retrogamer mag but that is from the UK, not homegrown.

    Anyone remember Incite magazine?

Gamefan was cool too. That was around a lil bit after gamer's republic shut down. They shut down for same reason, not enough readers to support them.

Gamesmaster is a cool magazine, and lots of others from that UK publisher.

Gamer's Republic was Dave Halverson's venture after he jumped ship from Gamefan Magazine.

Those who remember, Diehard Gamefan was the California-based import game shop in the early 1990's that had those cool ads in EGM magazine. I think around 1992 or 1993, Halverson decided to launch Gamefan magazine and positioned it as sort of a hardcore gaming mag which was somewhat popular. Lots of drama ensued in the late 1990's, so Halverson left and began Gamer's Republic which folded after only a few issues.

He started PLAY Magazine about 5 years ago and from what I can tell, the mag is still being published. Play has kind of a Gamefan/GR vibe because Halverson recruited some ex-Gamefan writers like Shidoshi and Nick Rox to write for him.

Too true, but most UK mags, particularly console specific ones are just written by raving loonys, unfortunately they sometimes get exclusives on interesting games so should be bought.

Good UK mags, from my experience
GamesTM - Just great basically. Pretty neutral, pretty honest and some very interesting articles
Retrogamer - Pretty much the same vein as GamesTM, but with fewer reviews (For obvious reasons...) and more articles. Retro based
EDGE - Honest and neutral, but incredibly up their own arses, considering themselves the elite gaming mag.

I subscribe to the 1st 2, and often pick up edge for when they get interesting things that GamesTM don't

    Ah, good old gaming mags!

I don't buy magazines very often now. The internet has negated much of the need for physical magazines, which is kind of sad really because I used to enjoy the suspense of waiting for the next issue to hit the streets before I'd get my fix of news and reviews.

Here are the magazines that I used to enjoy regularly:

    Your Sinclair (Future Publishing) [info]

I don't remember much about this, sadly. As far as I know, I no longer possess any issues of this magazine.

TOTAL! (Nintendo magazine, Future Publishing) [info]

Looking at some of the information on the Internet about this title, it was aimed at kids and thus I would probably cringe if I went back and read them now. The humour was generally very puerile. ;)

Super Play (Super NES magazine, Future Publishing) [info]

This was a very unique magazine as it was aimed at a single console only, that being the Super NES - no Game Boy, no NES, purely Nintendo's then-flagship 16-bit machine. From my memories of this magazine, it was a very good publication, though sadly it did not run for very long.

It then progressed to become N64 Magazine and now the present NGC Magazine which, incidentally, also covers the DS and GBA. I think that if I were to read paper gaming magazines as much as I did in the late 80s and early 90s, this would be my most frequently purchased.

But will it trasnform into the Nintendo Wee^H^Hii Magazine in the near future?

    CU Amiga (EMAP) [info]

This is the magazine I read the most as I became something of an Amiga fan. :)

Sadly it closed down with the demise of the Amiga as a home computer, but it did at least pass on with dignity rather than being reduced to a stapled, non-glossed black and white shit-roll like many of its rivals.

Other titles I bought from time to time were GamesMaster (when the TV show still existed), Nintendo Magazine System (wanky name, known as NMS for short), Amiga Power (or IS IT?) and Edge.

Hmmm, does anyone know if it's possible to get some of the good UK mags like retrogamer here? I've seen some UK mags like the Xbox one here. I also think I may get a subscription to Play.

I think some mags sell international subs on the web try their sites.

I just checked the edge site and it does but its £62 ($116) per year.

Retro gamer is £80 ($149) for 13 issues to anywhere in the world.

Most Barnes & Noble stores carry Retro Gamer and a bunch of the UK Xbox/PS2/GC mags (along with Mac and PC mags). I see them in EVERY B&N in my area, so I imagine this must be the case throughout the US. They're stocked along with the regular US gaming mags.
