For members in the UK that live in or near Bradford, it might be worth checking the games lounge at the National Media Museum. I fancy a blast at Donkey Kong for 20p a go. (I wonder if the old credit wire trick still works?) http://www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk/gameslounge/
I used to be able to do the 20 screens (Speccy version) on my first life. When I try now, I usually die at the Warehouse, or the Solar Power Generator.
I had about 2 hours there a few weeks back whilst waiting for the GF who was doing some shopping. It was a shame but it was pretty dead and I even saw a couple of kids sat near a machine playing games on there iphone
It sounds a bit disappointing if the showcase game is SF2, nice they have a Defender although it's a hard game to keep working all the time, although one suspects that a few of the games are 100 in 1 boards (as you can select what games you want and if you only select one game it will autoboot to it).
I've been a few times and it's nothing special, better than shopping with the missus though I s'pose. It's annoying really, there used to be 3 or 4 really good arcades in Bradford when I was a kid, now we're stuck with a lame excuse for an arcade in the film and photography museum or sticky/knackered controls on the machines in the bowling alley/cinema.
Are you from Bradford Jackhammer? Stu - Do you remember the 'Ideal' on Manchester road? It was the first arcade I had ever been in; my brother took me down to kick my ass on original Street Fighter. Good times!
That's the one Jackhammer! I spent alot of my youth there with my older brother and his mates. He hated taking me cause I cramped his style; I am 10 years younger than him. Where in Bradford do you live? You still around here?
Those amusements in town are just bandits like in pubs mate. There are maybe 6-7 dotted around the town centre and they are all full of old dears fluttering with their pensions! haha.
Yeah I remember that one, pretty good. The one in the Laser Quest lobby next door to where Jean Junction used to be had a Mega tech, that was cool. I also remember playing alex Kidd in there. I can't remember the name of my favourite one, or even the name of the cafe/restaurant it was under! It was at the bottom of town, near the interchange, I think the building is a pub now. They always had the latest machines in there and ran contests and stuff, loved the place and spent most of my childhood in there (even though I should have been at school ;-)). Was that the one near the ice rink? I remember that having a cool sit down racer in the middle of the room (checkered flag?). I loved that game, it had 3D graphics which were slow and glitchy as hell, but there was a loop the loop section in the track that was just incredible for the time . God I miss the old days, not so much the lack of funds mind
We used to have some great arcades in Hampshire years ago, they've all gone or only have a handful of modern pap arcade machines and lots of slot machines; nothing like it used to be; I don't see old school arcade machines these days at all. Thank goodness for MAME, even though I haven't used MAME for quite a while now. is still great for a blast on some games like 1942 !
Visited the games lounge yesterday. I set the high score for Donkey Kong, and then Manic Miner by clearing all 20 screens. 10 minutes later, some middle aged guy walks over with his wife, I thought my high score was in jeopardy. But when he said to his wife, "look, it's Manic Mike," I just had a quiet laugh safe in the knowledge my score was safe.
I believe there was a manic miner clone on the Color Genie (of all machines) that was called Manic Mike...
