So even though android is outselling and outperforming ios there is still the say that "the appstore is better than play"

Well I say "ok, which games?" after all apple hardware is anything but reasonably priced and with android devices packing betters specs and more options I think I need a really good reason to buy an ipad just for games. I thought about the ipod touch but it turns out it hasnt been updated in over 2 years and it shows: I tried playing San Andreas in one and the framerate was not solid, and the graphics were forced in low to mid settings.

I guess the best option is an ipad mini retina, which is $400, so I ask: which games are only for that platform and no other, and are so good that is worth buying the hardware?

I played a whooooole bunch of awesome titles on my iPod Touch a few years ago. Haven't gotten a newer device (iPad soon though!), so I've been out of the loop for a while. Some of the cool stuff I enjoyed back then:

    Hook Champ
    Super QuickHook
    Hook Worlds
A trilogy of grappling hook swinging games that fit the platform perfectly! Shorter levels, really great feel to the grappling hook, cool pixel art, and fantastic, hilarious writing. All iOS exclusive!

    Mage Gauntlet
An action RPG from the same dev. More funny writing, and really fun combat I thought.

    Wayward Souls
A spiritual sequel to Mage Gauntlet coming out really soon. Randomly generated dungeons, plenty of roguelike elements, lookin reaaally neat. iOS exclusive at the moment!

    1112 Series
Only on iOS and Mac. Adventure games with a heavy focus on atmosphere and some pretty tough puzzles. I've really dug them so far, excited to see where the story goes....

    Tiny Wings
One of the many bird games that have had insane mainstream success. This one definitely deserves the fame though! Gorgeous art and a really really fun, satisfying one-touch mechanic.

    Tilt to Live
Action game controlled exclusively via tilt, and it works fantaaastically.

Ooh, and I dunno if it's combatible with the iPad Mini, but I played Crabitron on a relative's iPad, and that was a really fun/hilarious one designed specifically for the device.

And then of course there's plenty of top notch non-exclusives that fit the platform really well, like:
    Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP
    New Orbit
Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor
    Super Hexagon
    Punch Quest

And man. The list goes on, and like I said I feel like I've been out of the loop for a while. Sure, you've got to do some digging past all the piles of free-to-play and less than stellar titles, but it seems to me like there's just endless mountains of really good stuff on there. There's probably plenty of "fuller" console style experiences like GTA too - but it's not something I'm familiar with on there. Most of the ones I listed are smaller, focused titles that play to the mobile nature really well.

It depends what metric you look at. Strictly, yes, there are more devices with Android than there are devices with iOS, but I don't know of any $89 off-brand Chinese phones that run iOS, and there are squillions of them out there.

Back on topic though, start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:IOS-only_games

Infinity Blade I,II and III, Darius Burst, Crazy Taxi are quite fun on iOS.

I use to play a lot on my iPad in the past, it's great for tower game and quick swipe action games, but since I've got a Vita, iPad is now mostly used for browsing, social and email.

There is a awesome racing game on there that reminds me of Powerslide. I think it's called Race Before (some year here) I can't remember the full title. Haven't used iOS for years...

Android always outsold ios in those markets because of price, but now its also happening in the developed world, and spec-wise those are not weak

About the games, I disappoint, don't see anything worth splurging $400, I rather get a PS4 instead

If you just want to play games, then hell no, it's not worth getting an iOS device for. I have an iPad and never play games on it because they're mostly bad, but for everything else it's nice. Then again, I also have a 3DS to play portable games on.
