I was all about dat emulation for a while, and while I'll still use it for MAME and FBA I came to realize having every game EVAR on a Raspberry Pi did not actually mean I was playing EVERY GAME EVAR. So while I am buying a Genesis and SFC and I have a Retro USB AVS on order, and I already have an N64 that's just been sitting in my entertainment center with Mario Kart 64 stuck it in and I'm buying those evil Flash Carts for all of them and sticking PC Engine, Portable games and a good chunk of the FBA on my Raspberry Pi running Lakka. I'm still going to buy games for these systems. I already have 8 Famicom games and 2 NES games ready to go, Most of them being Konami games. So to get to the point, Collecting has been on the brain lately, which from most of my threads you can probably already gather. Last week I was in a comic shop with the most ass backwards pricing I've ever seen. But I saw in a display case a complete Suikoden II and I put it under consideration they had it at $150. I'm not sure if it's the kind of RPG I'd enjoy though. Same reason I wouldn't pay the Premium for the Lunar games. Then the other day I was pricing out games. Ninja Warriors again for $100 EHHHH I'll pass put that ont he SD2SNES, but Chrono Trigger...Yeah even if it's just a loose cart, that's one my favorite games and I've never beaten it (Buying too many games at once syndrome) I have Gunstar Heroes on at least 2 other platforms, but $80 if I saw it for a complete copy, I'd probably consider picking it up. I wouldn't go that far for some Saturn games some Dreamcast games I'll just burn onto Verbatim discs and hope they load. But there's still a few out there I think I'd pay alittle high than normal for If I'm going to play them. So if you made it this far reading this long winded exposition, I ask, What games are you willing to pay over $80 for?
70's Robot Anime GEPPY-X for PS1. All of the online rips I found did not function properly or were missing disc 4. So I got DeChief to find me a copy of it on YAJ and I shelled out the $82 for it CIB with near mint discs. With his fees and shipping, it totaled out to I think $107. The game normally goes for like $150 in that condition too Shoutout to @DeChief for hooking me up with my favorite game!
TBH, even when I own the original I play on emulators nowadays. Save states and fast-forward just save me so much time that I can play more games and read more books this way. The Pandora is a godsend for 32bit and previous consoles for that. You really have to pick and choose your games though, because it's true that too many choices is paralysing. You end up playing nothing because you can't decide what to play. That's the reason I only have like 20 games on my GDEMU, pretty much all games I own physically too...
(Disclaimer, CDN dollars) I paid about $80 for Shenmue II PAL Dreamcast, and I never regretted it. REZ is one of those games I'm on the fence. I've never played it, so no nostalgia factor, but it's made by the same people who made Lumines, which I freakin adored back when the PSP was brand new. It goes for like 90 bucks though, which is a lot for a game I haven't played. Dodonpachi is the other game around the same price as Rez, since it just looks so awesome to play. For some reason the copy I burned won't play, all my other burned Saturn games play..
I've lost track of how many copies of Doom I own these days. PC bigbox, Steam, Xbox, XBLA, RPG Edition, GBA, and likely a boatload of others. I'm not even collecting, I just buy them whenever I need a Doom fix. And it all adds up. So... does this count?
Rez is on PS4 I think you can get the physical copy on I am 8 bit still. Which Dodonpachi? $80 us for a PS1 copy $115 for Saturn (got mine around $50)
No PS4 here. I'm so meh on most new games that honestly, the only game I want for it is FF VII, and that's only if they don't fuck it up. Rez would be cool, but something about playing it in its original format. I mean, I could get the PS2 version which isn't that bad for price last I checked, but for some reason I'm craving the original version for the DC. Dodonpachi for the Saturn. There's a few up for about $93-115 CDN on ebay at the moment, thinking about pulling the trigger actually, lol.
Honestly the best versions of Rez aren't the Dreamcast version. But that's my opinion. It's all about how the game interfaces with the controller, and you just don't get that on the Dreamcast. There aren't many Saturn Shooters worth their high price tags but the extra mode and better graphics over the PS1 version (Which is still closer to arcade perfect) is worth it.
On the N64 I really wouldn't pay a premium for anything. Emulation is great but if there is even the slightest error compared to playing on real hardware it bothers me. That's why I like the 64drive so much. It is just like having the real cartridges. I wish someone would make an SNES flash cart that had all the special chips like the DSP, CX4, and Super FX. I'm sure it would be really expensive and complicated though. On the N64 I kept all the classics like mario, zelda, conker's but wouldn't mind picking up a nicer copy of Majora's Mask. On the SNES I would definitely pay $100 for a copy of Mega Man X 3 if I could find one that cheap.
Agreed on the N64 it's a good system with a bad controller and games that aging pretty badly. I'd buy maybe the racing games. Kirby 64 and the Zeldas but that's it, I'll everdrive everything else. In THEORY, the SD2SNES can have support for all those chips added eventually. Otherwise I'm just dumping all the unsupported roms on my Raspberry pi or in the case of Kirby, just spending whatever on them. I LOVE ME SOME KIRBY.
Which version of Rez would you say is your favorite? Actually I ended up buying Dodonpachi last night. Mint copy for $79 US. Coulda got a bit cheaper but I wanted the original, not the 'SegaSaturn Collection' version. Ohh, there's gonna be some mayhem on my TV screen soon!
The PS2 Rez is probably closest to the Dreamcast version and the vibration feed back is amazing. The 360 Version is OK and you can use a ton of controllers for feedback. The PS4 version has a new area, Area X which is a better Rez Sequel than Child of Eden, but I don't think the Duel Shock 4 vibrates as intesnely as the 360 or DS2 does. All Versions of Rez do have physical copies. The 360 version is on Qubed which comes with Lumines Live and the AMAZING Every Extend Extra Extreme.
SOLD, Once I get my scalers sorted out I'm going to try to get ALL the N64 racers. See if any are as good as Ridge Racer and Mario Kart 64.
Top Gear Overdrive is a sweet game. It's got an upgrade system like Top Gear 2, but you also get to buy new cars along the way. Also, if tacos aren't your thing, take the hot dog out for a spin
