Wait, so does this list of games mean that up until now you could play Hexen 1 or fucking SWAT 2 (the strategy game one that nobody even remembers) online?
That's what I was thinking. Even Quake 2 is on that list! If so, I guess that's too bad - but I'm guessing not many people use GameSpy anymore, which is probably why they're shutting it down.
It replaced utils like Kali back in the 90s, I believe I last fired up gamespy 2 years ago but spent years on Quake CTF using it.. Pre-Gamespy was Kali 95 and roger wilco to chat.. I believe the term HPB(High Ping Bastard) was conceived then because 95% of us were on dialup
This is going to affect other games too. Mortal Kombat 9 and Street figther 3 online edition use GameSpy's servers.
Battlefield 1942, Soldier of Fortune: Double Helix, SWAT 3 and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. The four best multiplayers ever, in my opinion. Most of those games support alternative connection or LAN game (and most of them are supported in Gameranger that is great). Only a few use Gamespy as obligatory middleware.
I guess there was probably one single, solitary server from 1998 that they never moved to a different game, and honestly, is anyone loading up Hexen 1 or SWAT 2? No, the answer is no.
