Huh, didn't know that. All my Chinese friends have 360 consoles or PS3s in their homes in Shanghai/Guangzhou/Henan.. weird.

The article says "puts it in direct competition with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo." doesn't that suggest the aren't banned?

There have been more than one iQue branded Nintendo machinea in China than just the N64-in-a-controller-thingy. So, they're not banned because they are handhelds?

They say consoles are banned but it's more of a toothless tiger than a real law. You can easily find game consoles wherever you want. Most come pre-installed with modchips as well.

Apparently. As much as there isn't much reason to want them. Less than a dozen games for GBA or DS were localized into Chinese, almost all first-party only. DS having fewer than GBA at that.

The iQue got around the ban on consoles because it was a plug-in-play controller that you downloaded games onto. Game consoles are banned in china because of gambling reasons... which is to say they're banned like porno is banned. Meaning, of course, they're everywhere.

Yeah I guess being "underground" would explain why I don't find much info about the console scene there. I'm not even sure what NTSC-C region PS2 games exist. ICO is certain at least. Ape Escape 2 was announced by Sony, but I can't find clear photos of released copies. redump.org claims it's dumped though.

Why is it called NTSC-C? I thought China used PAL.

Only Sony can answer that one. They named it. Such a PS2 not modified (if you can find one without chip...) should be DVD region 6 too.

Indeed, there's two big questions here:
Whether it's actually region locked to play nothing but NTSC-C software. (which effectively AFAIK would make it not PS1 backwards compatible)
What games were released in the format.

Are you guys sure your not confusing Taiwan and HK under the China banner? Because for Taiwan for example, some people would argue that's just a part of China.

No. Sony did announce it with an official press release. http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/031128e.pdf

However assuming these sources are true... We could be looking at a Virtual Boy level travesty for how PS2 fared in mainland China.

The whole "unofficial" part makes console modding semi-legal, got a friend who went to Guangzhou and you could get your X360 modded and RGH'd for like 25 bucks

Biggest losers here are chinese devs who can't use their gigantic local market and have to work for EA doing all the dumb/repetitive/oh-god-I-want-to-kill-myself shit western devs dont do anymore

    Pay is shit too BTW
