Ok Doomsday Gamers. Just for fun / randomness Scenario: Mass EMP related Event knocks out world power, communications and electronics, planes drop from the skies, madness and mayhem ensue. supplies / supermarkets run out causing riots emergency services unable to cope. Questions: 1. How will you keep gaming until society and order is restored 2. How would you prepare for this possible event 3. As some of us live in somewhat unstable locations around the world, maybe danger of flooding or earthquakes, volcanic activity nuclear meltdown... whatever, have you already made any preperations for you're survival and maybe you're games too? and if so what? Who knows, this useless thread may come in useful!
I'd cut my losses for my Xbox, PC, and such, Get into my old truck that has a carburetor and can be push started if the starter is knocked out, and head to Mexico. Oh and grab my $5K (USD) of emergency money too.
haven't seen many, but hypothetically speaking, if i had seen any i would probably like them. as for sonicdude, good ol diesel engine truck would be handy, as would mexico, land of tequila... i'm thinking setting up some kind of emp protection, Faraday cage protecting things like radio both CB and ham practical stuff massive emp events have occurred in the past and could at any point
This is like the third one in around a month ($100 million dollars, if your collection was lost, and now this).
Unless your game consoles, TV, and basically everything needed is sealed in one of those EMP protected boxes, all your lovely transistors will be fried and useless. The most practical thing is to have a laptop and solar charger and spare batteries inside such a box. If you have a sufficient shielded area to store all of your stuff in then you still have the issue of generating power. You could possibly store some fuel as well as solar power equipment. But all this has less to do with gaming and more just to do with the issues of an EMP disaster. But back to gaming, another easy thing to do would be to put a Gameboy (original, gameboy color, gameboy advance) or Sega Nomad or GameGear inside a shielded container along with games and batteries and a compact solar power system.
You will be pleased to know that sega are currently working on the dreamcast 2! They have realised that "what if we never released the 32x?" & wish to make ammends! I am so excite! This may or may not be true......
I live on a farm and on almost any days I can see a heard of deer as many as 20 and a rafter of wild turkey over 30 easy. A little patience sitting from the roof of my house and I'd have enough food for some months (deer provides a lot). I still have an old hand powered well pump nearby so water's not a problem either. In theory I should be able to last a while on the farm provided people doesn't swarm it from major cities over 50 miles away.
This question doesn't make sense. So... an EMP blast has destroyed all electronics in the world, and you're asking us how we would continue playing games? Um... we wouldn't, unless we could build new videogame consoles from scratch, or fix the ones that were destroyed. I guess one solution is that you could build some kind of EMP-resistant bunker and put a bunch of videogame consoles inside. Still, I think it's a silly question. People are so obsessed with the "end of the world". Didn't you learn anything from 2012? The world will never end. EDIT: I see MottZilla already had the idea about EMP-resistant casing.
true its silly but i was bored, the world will probably go on for a long time, barring any natural disaster / alien star destroyer, but its more the breakdown of society once the easy way of life we're used to ends. question is probably the wrong way around.
I do the only thing I can do. a) Keep all my shit in my room b) My room is upstairs & on top of a hill. Low flood risk. c) I'm sort of a weirdo so no one dares breaking in d) I also grew up with, helped out and good friends with some local thugs too, plus had a fair few things myself
im just gonna find a ford capri kit it out with a super charger and some extra fuel tanks and nos then roam the wastelands eating dog food and being a general badass, playing snake on a nokia phone as we all know they'd survive.
Shielding devices from EMP is a bit more complicated than that. Generally when the EMP event occurs the equipment needs to be completely encased/sealed in a protected area. This is part of why EMP is so scary. All sorts of critical electrical devices *can't* be shielded the way we know how because they have to be open to the world and not sealed in a box. Older technology that existed around the time of the development of nuclear weapons was actually less vulnerable to damage compared to modern semi-conductors in use today. What's even more scary is most if not all governments do not take the threat of EMP seriously. In the past the US kept reasonable resources on standby to repair infrastructure in the case of an EMP event. But these days, everyone is extremely vulnerable. Though it's certainly possible the US Military if anyone has atleast some sort of plan for such a disaster. The most scary thing of all is that a nuclear device detonated in the right place could cause an EMP blast that would affect a huge area. Not a city, not a state, an entire continent could have all its electrical devices fried. And basically every electrical device would then be garbage. Good for nothing but scrap material/metal. So beyond the more important disaster to society that EMP would be, it would be devastating for the history of electrical devices. All your old game cartridge often thought of as indestructible with their hardy MaskROM would be fried and useless. Your consoles and computers as well. Optical Discs might survive. Hard Drives and other magnetic storage would probably be gone. But hey your Vinyl record collection is still perfect once you fit that record player! Just think how crazy the prices for old game consoles and cartridges would be if 99% of them were fried by EMP.
Just the thought of every single electronic device I own, fried isn't a good thought at all :/ Almost make me cry.
