Sony really tried to make UMD a legitimate format for video. They tried really really hard for a year or so.

Problem was price point. They costed more than the DVD release and no extras. Honestly psp did better than vita cause you could easily mod it.

And there were no smartphones back then.
Touch screen smartphones started to become truly mainstream in 2009.

There were two problems with UMD movies:

    1. Nobody wanted to buy movies that you could only watch on a tiny PSP screen
    2. It was easier (not to mention free) to just put a movie file on a memory stick that you could play with the PSPs built-in video player

I still have my spider man 2 umd, bought to have at least one. The reason I never bought more was price, lack of extra features, and the fact you could just put movie files onto a memory card.

Most people didn't have a phone capable of that and even if they did, the quality and watching experience was poor.

I was lucky enough to have an iPod that showed video, so I could watch on that tiny little screen.

[IMG]Too bad this thing is useless now, as most Western countries use the Digital TV signal, despite what TV may say in sitcoms.
