The sound on my GBC started to go quiet and garbled a while back, which I had just assumed was due to a defective speaker. There was also a strange buzzing noise which was just barely audible through the speaker, but even more pronounced through headphones. I just replaced the speaker with a generic one I got from ebay, which seems to have made the audio clear and loud again, but the buzzing noise is still present.

Any ideas what may be causing it, and how to fix it?

    Hello,

It could be capacitor issues. Check if they are not leaking.

Yeah, I had a look at everything on the board and none of the caps seem to be leaking or causing any obvious damage. If I can't diagnose what's wrong then I may eventually just replace them all and see if that helps. The buzzing is definitely caused by some sort of interference or power issues - if I run the audio through amplified speakers I don't get any noise at all.

I had a buzzing noise because the batteries I was using were almost empty. Replaced the batteries and it was gone. I don't know how you're powering your system, but that could be it.

It's definitely not the batteries, I've gone through at least 3 sets since the buzzing started.

It is probably the capasitors as was previously suggested. They might look fine, but there is still a good chance they are dead. I personally have not had this problem with a GBC but have had it with Game Gears, an amplified speaker, and an original Game Boy. All have had a buzzing noise because of bad capacitors. I am almost certain that the GBC you have requires new capacitors.

EDIT: It's also worth adding that the Game Gear capacitors looked fine. Look at the solder pads, they might have some corrosion if they have begun to leak, although they can still be damaged.

Well I just replaced all of the caps with fresh ones, no dice. The buzzing noise is still there.

Could it possibly be related to interference from the screen? I noticed that the buzzing seemed to vary in time with the screen transitions when I popped in Pokemon Silver to test it.
