Thought you guys might be interested in some of my recent GBS related mods. I've posted a guide regarding this over at the following link: http://soldierx.com/bbs/201211/CGAEGA-VGA-converter-Upgrayedd The mods: -Add RGB SCART IN -Add Audio IN (via SCART, 1/8", and RCA Stereo -Add Audio OUT 1/8" out -Clean Sync Signals
I do not believe you understand what a sync stripper is and what its actually doing - judging from your write up. Or that composite video as sync is perfectly fine as a sync source - not "incorrect" as also written in your write up.
Your post goes on about getting the "correct signal" from the console via an expensive cable. There is nothing incorrect about using composite video as sync. You also call the signal "dirty", this is also not true. Its not cleaning the signal, its seperating sync as the GBS doesnt know to ignore composite video - as its designed for RGBS or RGBHV. Also, consoles like the N64 that has issues with cross hatch X across the picture still has it when you use a sync stripper - again, it doesnt "clean up" anything. The only solution is to get csync (or use luma) for sync and the problem goes away. Your post is a little misleading imo. But you have nicely put all the mods together in a single post, I am just nitpicking I guess =/
I can understand your perspective here! For the non RGB initiated, it's difficult to understand why they need 'special' cables (or a proper hardware mod for 'pure sync') on most converters/scalars. The fancy cables I mentioned are in relation to all the ebay cables claiming to fix issues with various devices by providing them a 'pure' or 'clean' sync signal. Calling the signal 'dirty' is indeed misleading,
on a side note - I used to be a root admin with bitemytaco on sbhacker.net - so I have seen that website before. Also, please don't think I am being overly negative, I am just blunt =/
Honestly, I appreciate the feedback, most people would have completely missed it regarding the sync I wasn't aware of the N64 bit with Cross hatch (THS7314 came in just yesterday for that guy!) so I'll include that info in there after I can check it out! Hope you have upgraded since the SB 5101 days ;D
I released one of the firmwares for the SB6120 (and general puma5 based modems). I am mentioned in his devcon talk and would have been speaking if I didnt live on the other side of the world I didnt live in a cable area for most of the time though, so it was done for fun (its also the reason I have an expensive universal programmer - I used to dump all the firmwares from new modems for us to start work on). The N64 issue is mostly with Samsung tv's btw and likely only when directly connected (not via scaler). So you will probably never see it, it was just to highlight that the sync from composite video by using a sync stripper isnt "corrected", its just split out.
New Docsis 3 standards look like they've shaken some things up for most of the cable scene, however I haven't kept up with it. Since I don't live in a cable area I can't really partake in the fun
