I am wanting to add standard RCA jacks to my genesis 2 console. I have read several guides online but all of them are for the Genesis 1.

I know I need to run a common ground then have 1 wire for each the audios and 1 for the video.

My problem is when looking at the plug on the mobo I cant see what solder points I need to use. There are 8 total joints and I need 3 of them (video and audio)

Does anyone know of a picture or can anyone tell me which to use? Please let me know and thanks!

Thanks for the tip but I already had found that one and it will not work ;)

"Note! The numbering sequence on this diagram is NOT the proper numbering, and won't match the numbers on your connector"

They numbered them their own way for some odd reason?

No matter thought as I went ahead and preformed the mod on a 1st ver. Genny and it works great. While I was at it I also did a red->blue LED swap and cleaned out the case. Overall im very pleased and can now use normal RCA patch cables~!

You fail... Blue is so passe nowdays. A white or magenta LED would look much cooler on a Megadrive.

Well its not actually a blue, its more of a purpleish color but it was all I had on tap. I hadent planned on replacing it at all but once I opened up the system and saw how CRAZY stupid it was to replace I couldnt resist. I mean its a standard red 3mm LED with the legs still on stuck in a hole with a plug pulled up over the legs and the legs bent sideways lol.

I have never had a easier LED replacement job ^^

Other then emulators I have never had any hookups for my genesis's other then RF and I must say with this mod the picture is so nice! Im very pleased.

Couldn't find a Composite AV cable? Well I'm sure it's a huge improvement over RF. Now give yourself some time, and maybe then you'll want to add S-Video. ;) Or Component Video. I still need to buy a SCART RGB cable for mine. That's probably the main reason I haven't played my Genesis in awhile. The other reason would be that the controllers don't last. I have a couple of those newer 6 button gamepads, but the D-Pads are mushy and after use they suck. And the original 3-button pad has waaaaaay too short of a cable.

Hold up. Numbering in mini-DIN connectors has never been standardized. Compare the GamesX pinout to this one:

    http://pinouts.ru/Game/sega2_pinout.shtml

That the numbering is the same is completely a coincidence, since there's nothing to stop a manufacturer from saying that the numbers start at the left side of the top row. But note that all the signals are on the same pins. Using arbitrary numbers is just a convenient way of avoiding typing out 'Second pin from the Left on the Middle row' when we can agree to call that one number five instead.

The pinout at GamesX is accurate, and I've used it to make a half-dozen RGB cables. It works fine, and the numbering is largely irrelevant. If your objection is that the PCB traces aren't also diagrammed, it's a simple matter to do a continuity test from the pin to the solder point.

On a related note, is it possible to mod a genesis to use spdif? I ask because, like the composite, the audio output is crap and full of lots of noise. It would be equally nice if you could simply remove that noise.

The Genesis has a screwy audio output that comes from multiple analog sources (mostly due to the Master System backward compatibility) and so there's no one common signal from which to draw SPDIF. You pretty much have to put in a whole separate A-to-D convertor board to get the signal out. A direct SPDIF conversion is possible in a Super Nintendo with the Cirrus Logic audio chip because it's a single source and the digital signal is already present.

This topic over at GamesX covers the bases pretty thoroughly:

Sorry Kendrick, you are correct. I was looking around on forums for GameSX (or whatever the owner of gameSX uses for a forum) and they were dissusing about the numbering not being correct for something or other, I cant remember.

Anyway yes I was talking about the trace joints on the mobo but I could have used contanuity but didnt really think about it at the time. (half asleep)

Anyway sorry again Kendrick and thanks everyone for the help. The picture is great. I did the mod mainly because yesterday morning I got 2 new mint boxed (w/ manual) games at the thrift shop. They are Mickey Mouses Castle of Illusion and Mickey Mouse in Disneys Fantasia! 2 dollars each and both work great and are very fun disney platformers.
