So I was sitting here reading Jurassic Park and it got me thinking about gene therapy and cloning and I was wondering what other peoples thought were on the subject. Would you use gene therapy to make yourself stronger faster or smarter if you could or maybe just change your eye color if you wanted? What about your children? What about the moral or ethical implications?

I think its all okay as long as it doesn't fall into "the wrong hands" ,lol. You know, like making armies of clones or something similar ^_^

With great power comes great responsibility :smt042

So that all the governments in the world out of the window then!

Seriously though, gene therapy is a good thing when it comes to treating some diseases like sickle cell anaemia, or degenerative disorders like altzheimers (spl). But... I don't agree with stem cell research, on the principle that you are basically creating a human to hack bits out them to treat someone else. Sure it works, but would you accept a dead foetus being grafted onto your chest in the vain hope of making you live a year or 2 longer?

Similarly, as seen in the news recently. I don't agree with parents having another child purely to treat another child. Imagine being that child, and knowing the only reason you are alive is, because your parents wanted your bone marrow/kidney to treat your older sibling.

I think it's pretty cool. 1 day we wil have an army of super soldier clones with genes spliced from every weird and wonderfull animal known to man.

On another note I think the problem with cybernetics is they are too busy trying to make replacement limbs, when in fact I believe they should be creating additional limbs so we could all have a tail attached which could act as a 3rd arm or leg or toolbox (kinda like xaero from Quake 3)

I can't wait until I can walk into a tattoo parlor and get my genetic code rewritten to bring out archiac traits from our long lost animal ancesotrs.

The first thing I'd get are little fly suckers on my hands and feet so I can walk up walls. That would be dope. Next, maybe gills so I could breathe under water, but the ulitmate would have to be chemeleon-like skin, so I could blend in with my surroundings like some kind od genetically altered ninja.

It'll happen within out life-time, just watch.

Yeah, an army with clones of Miyamoto and Yuji Naka would develop a mass of fantastic games..... :smt043

  10. I think Tachikoma summed it up best - gene manipulation and even cloning on the cellular (as in biological, not phone) level could hold untold benefits for the human race, but to start getting into cloning human beings seems really unwise to me, for the reasons Tachikoma outlined - it might be far too easy for us to dehumanize our creations and just use them for spare parts, etc.

By the way, Jurassic Park is a kickass book, you have good taste in reading material there, A. Snow. :smt023

    erm, no. other way around.

and bleh, the movie was nice in sixth grade, but now it's pure ass.

  13. id-republix is right, the book was initially written (way back in 1992, I believe) by Michael Crichton and then made into a movie in '96 or whenever the hell it was. It was arguably one of the best movies to come from his work, as while his books often get the silver screen treatment, the results are most of the time lackluster at best.

However, I still think the first movie is pretty cool myself. Yes, there were quite a few creative liberties taken with the story, but overall, it's a pretty good movie that stands on its own even with the discrepancies with the source material.

The movie came out summer 1993. It was the number one box office hit in history. Spiderman broke that record. Still, the only movie that really really really is similar to this topic is the 6th Day with Arnold Schwarzenager. It's a cult classic, like Total Recall. The premise of that movie is that Cloning humans are illegal, but cloning human parts, like organs are ok. A big corporation secretly clones humans, only certain humans, to get their way in the government, media, etc. However, when they clone those people, they have an insurance plan and that plan is that they give the new body of that person a genetic defect, so if that person goes against the word of what the corporation wants, then that person dies of a bad disease, but if that person keeps their promise, they still live.

Well I was talking about the USA box office which makes up for about 90% of hollywood's profits, the rest are from the rest of the world.
