Yahoo is closing Geocities on October 26.Well, internet services grow and fall every day you might think. However Geocities is available since 1994 and has some great sites about obscure video gaming. It's a pity that this information will be lost.

Here are some of my favourite sites:

The Ultimate Multi Game Doctor II page:
    http://www.geocities.com/multigamedoctor/mgd2.html

    Skywalkers Playstation corner
    http://www.geocities.com/mike_bee/psx.html

    NOT YAROZE
    http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/2004/psx/ny_e.htm

    The PSXWORKSHOP

I have a site there. Boy that was like the 'myspace' of the Internet 90s. 14mb of webspace; a Java applet that helped you design your webpage. You weren't up-to-date if you didn't have your own webpage back then lol. Sad to see it go - just a sign of the times.

I hope the owners of those pages save everything.

    Yup,

I know acquaintance artist who was using that site and I say your right Madhatter, Lol! It was! the myspace of the 90's. I took a look at it my self and could really find a use for it as a gamer. Interesting to hear though there shuting it down, Hmmmm.... :-(

I guess somethings do change after all.

    That is horrible news.

What does that mean about all of us? I am turning in to the guy that will tell some young guy, "Back when I was a kid we had Geocities and you only needed 14mb of space to build a site all the girls flocked too!"

Why is geocities closing? If they are going to kill a piece of internet history they must have a good reason.

I hope somebody buys GeoCities and keeps it running, or at least that somebody makes a bakcup of the GeoCities servers.

They have a great one -- they don't want to piss away resources on it.

In fact most of old Geocities sites are already stored in the Internet Archives (archive.org), thought many pictures may be missing since the first backups of websites back in the 90s were made with no images due to the lack of bandwidth.

Anyway if a list of old and rare websites could be made in order to download them before Geocities closes, just in case they weren't backed up properly in the Internet Archive...
