Germany lift porn level restriction on Doom/Doom II http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/doom-and-doom-2-now-acceptable-in-germany-berlin-renamed-e1m1/ Now I wonder exactly how many copies of both games were "smuggled" in from Austria?
Many... but they didn't need to be smuggled. Doom wasn't banned, so it was always sold legally in Germany. Only difference between Doom and, for instance, Halo is that it was forbidden to advertise it in any way (i.e. referring to its full name in a magazine, even 10 years later) and to sell it in a shop where it's visible for everyone under 18. Like pornography, if you want, but it wasn't illegal. As opposed to i.e. Manhunt or Wolfenstein 3D. It's illegal to sell these in Germany (you can own them though). That elevates them on one level with the book Mein Kampf, which can be owned, but not sold in Germany.
They got Unreal Tournament a few years after it was out, bought it with 14 at ProMarkt. All Quakes, german laws are funny.
