Even though you can never beat the orginal console, I always thought it was a nice touch when using Emulators to see the game pixel perfect.
Goh: Take a really high res picture of your TV playing an old school system (make sure the flash doesn't cause glare). We can probably discern what's happening, although I'll bet a shiney quarter it's being upscaled. The question (and said thing) is will they implement it? How hard is a fake scanlines filter? Not hard at all, but no monitor that I know of has one. Systems which either have poor RGB signals (early NG machines) or no RGB signals (PC-Engine) will look better through emulation. This isn't an opinion, they will feature far less signal loss than their S-Video counterparts from the original console. The only issues is w/ their level of emulation. But, just like with 1/4 frame lag, etc., most issues with many systems being emulated aren't humanly discernable. Even the dorkiest of KOF fans could probably not tell the difference between Kawaks/Mame/NG Console. PC-Engine emulation is another story, unfortunately.
I've never heard of one not requiring an amp (or at least not looking WAY better with the amp). Also, the few I've come in contact with, while good and WAY better than S-Video, aren't the most kick-ass signal. Magic Engine through an AVGA looks better. Feel free to send one over to prove me wrong! We could also name some other systems: PC-FX, Marty, and give FM-Towns an asterisk, since most of the games are hardcoded to 480i which seems retarded given that the monitors were trisynch. I've not messed with Towns emulation but in theory you could force them into 240p.
You can freely choose an emulator or a console if you like; I'm just reacting to the "no RGB" comment, which is a bit disingenuous. Better or not? Here's an RGB screen capture:
