Just purchased a PC-FX and Zeroigar off Ebay. Oddly enough, the Zeroigar was "new" with a BIN of $150. Bootleg? I hope not, the seller had a 100% rating, though he only had a 26 or so feedback. I may get screwed over, but here's to hoping. Anyways, what other games are accessible to people who don't know much Japanese on the system? Yeah, I know about Zenki but I don't have the $300 for it at the moment. Nor do I have the $100+ for Chip Chan Kick. I'm thinking about picking up Battle Heat though. Isn't that the game where its like, a cartoon, but a fighting game, and it actually works well? I believe thats what I heard anyways.
Errm, battle heat isnt the game were you choose chicks and then get to see them naked after the fight?
I don't think so... If it is... I wouldn't complain. And I think I posted this in the wrong forum, sorry guys, I thought I had posted it in Rare and Obscure. Actually Shadowlayer, I think you're referring to the PC-Engine Duo/Saturn game Advanced V.G.. Though they don't get naked... just... very... provocative poses. Edit: I was right about Battle Heat. http://www.pcenginefx.com/PC-FX/html/pc-fx_world_-_game_reviews_-_b.html Now I just gotta wait for March/April for that new batch of PC-FX games.
Ok Battle Heat - bit of an odd one. Some people really love it and others just find it kind of dull. I like it and it is a sort of showpiece game for a slightly unique style of gameplay. Plus the opening animation showcases some truly impressive video playback. I would pick up Battle heat, as it is cheap and kind of playable. I always give it a quick play when my pc-fx comes out of the cupboard. I only warn you that I know a couple of people who cannot stand it, one of my mates said that if it was any other console no one would give it the time of day. If you can't understand Japanese I guess the rpg and stg games are out, which leaves you with anime games and the excellent Chip Chan and Zenki. If you know little Japanese you are probably best saving up for the big guns (they are worth it imo). Get chip chan first and end on the showpiece.
I wonder how many pc-fx collections in the world consist of a console and 3 games only. Certainly if I ever buy one (which I should really as a PCE whore) I'll only be buying 3 games.
 I think I'll wind up with... 5 or 6 games. Zeroigar, Battle Heat, Chip Chan Kick, Zenki, Tengai Makyo Karakuri, Galaxy Fraulien Yuna FX, and Ruruli Ra Rura. Hell, I may even buy Fire Woman Matoi-gumi, Lil' Red Riding Hood CHA-CHA, Langrisser FX, Farland Story FX, and Last Imperial Prince... those games just look cool. As for my knowledge of Japanese: I took a year of it when I first came to college, but I haven't kept up on it. Back then I could read hirugana and katakana fairly well, but my kanji was very poor. As for translating, I'd have to have some kind of book around to look up words I didn't know (and there are a lot of them). One day I may give Nihon-go another stab just so I can enjoy the PC-FX and... well... a huge portion of ye old Saturn collection (I think of the 500 or so games I have a solild 100+ require Japanese to play). Anyone know where I can find good translation guides for PC-FX games?
To get you in a shopping spree mood check out - http://pc-fx.moemoe.gr.jp/ Run a translation program through it or a kanji readings plug-in and you're sorted. Either that or you can just look at the pics. Either way you can get an idea of the range of games if you want to track them some down and stray away from the "3 action game route"! (BTW Riding hood cha cha is quite good fun) As for your Japanese I would invest in an electronic dictionary tailored for Kanji like the Wordtank V80. I can't play some Adv or Rpg without this by my side. It does not disrupt your playing much either, once you have gone to the bother to look up a kanji you rarely forget it. I rate once you have about 1000 basic kanji sorted you can play most games and will only have to look up the particular game-specific vocab. Just give yourself 3 kanji a day to learn and in one year you will have that crucial 1000 kanji sorted. (you can slack off a couple of days as well if you do 3) Once you have 1000 they all start to link together in sounds, radicals, pairings etc, the more you learn the easier they are to remember. I only stumble on a new kanji when it has a weird radical or lots of irregular readings (which happens a lot in classical Japanese).
Thanks for the advice waraki! I will definitely be taking it! I'll try to get a book of kanji translations and get started on that this summer.
K I checked the game.... I wouldn't call that "provocative", I think the correct term is OMG!!!1 B00BS!!!!1:lol:
There's a PCFX version of Return to Zork, right? If its in English in any way, buy it and play it. I love it...on PC anyway.
There is. I would imagine its in Japanese though. So sadness. If it is in English I will definitely pick it up though. I think I have a Saturn version of it somewhere (though I could be mistaken). Anyways, so why did the PC-FX crash and burn? I assume NEC with all their add-ons and updates basically foreshadowed Sega's demise, so was that what killed the PC-FX? From what I've been reading it seems like the japanese should have eaten this console up.
Maybe the Saturn killed it, since it had a higher 3D capacity and the same (or even better) 2D power, plus more games...
You guys didn't tell me it had an S-Video output!!! Had to run snag an S-Video cable so it could be sexy like all my Saturn stuff. Zeroigar isn't here yet... that seller sucks as far as shipping goes. Oh well. Here's some pics (hosted by "me") of the new addition.
There are 3 Battle Heat type games...well Battle Heat...the Tengai Makyo one and princess of hyper cheese fmv lady wrestling or something. Id get those.
Fixed! I was organizing my photobucket account the other night, forgot to change the URLs to the new ones.
