I bought one of thos GG2tv boards the other week and have since been attempting to install it into my gamegear.
So far the composite video works perfectly, however, I cannot get the RGB the work properly, I've wired it and re-wired it several times double checking every connection and this is the best picture I've been able to achieve.

Frankly it's been driving me mad haha and if nothing else I could use a fresh perspective on what might be wrong

Could be sync issue's. Your sync could be off.

Did you get a rev1 or rev2 board?

If whatever did you follow the right guide for your board?

Have you spoken to Tim direct?

yeah looks like a sync issue, you need csync going to pin 20 of your scart connector if you're using one, and pin 18 grounded.

    http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=43250

this shows where csync can be tapped straight from the game gear motherboard. try getting it directly from there.

i dont know much about the GG2tv boards but it looks like you're getting an image and all the colours, but just no sync

I followed the correct instructions to the letter. I emailed him but am still awaiting a response In the meantime I will try fiddling with the sync as suggested

Just as an update I fiddled with the c-sync in every way suggested and even a couple I dreampt up myself, made absolutely no difference :/

Honestly, with the rolling and shearing image, it looks like your TV expects RGB to be 50Hz only and it's going crazy with the GG's 60Hz signal. You should try the RGB on a different TV first, and/or possibly modify your SCART cable to connect more of the required pins (blanking, etc?)

Yeah I suppose. GG was exclusively 60hz (some PAL Master System games have issues).

I can say with confidence that it's not a 60hz issue both of my Tvs run my canadian genesis through RGB without issue. I think it's got to be something to do with my wiring somewhere but I've done so many different things with the c.sync line that I don't know what to do next haha. I've also checked everything for continuity and triple checked every solder joint. Its almost as though the sync isn't reaching the TVs (even though there is very definitely something physically traveling down the wire), I can cut the wire withe sync line while it is running and it makes absolutely no difference to the picture. I also tried the composite output as sync to no avail.

I think I've wired up the scart properly, though i'm not so sure about my RGB switch and blanking signal, could those mess up the sync? The tv which shows the rolling picture (my LCD jsut flat refuses to accept the signal) switches to 16:9. To be honest those two were just quickly thrown together so I could see if i got an rgb picture my thinking was essentially "well it auto switches to RGB, I'll work out how to do it properly when I make the final RGB cable" though the final socketed RGB cable has been put on hold until I can get the RGB actually working haha

that's weird, it should work fine with composite video or c sync maybe the csync / composite out from the GG isnt strong enough?

have you tried a cap and resistor on the csync line?

also is this mod meant to output RGBS ? or is it meant to output component / YUV eg R G B with sync on green or something?

TV is switching to AV for RGB so thats working, you got colour and picture so they RGB lines are fine, it's gotta be the sync, as you say it looks like it's not getting to the TV

i know this sounds daft but give pin 20 on the scart end a wiggle and see if it stays in place 20 should be csync.

I have a GGTV2 board and have used it with RGB with no issue. With both composite and C-sync as Sync.

What sort of cable are you using? You wired directly to the pads up to a Scart plug?
Did you try wiring +5v to the scart too? I recall reading some TVs/monitor use that for RGB detection or something.

Hope you get it sorted, this is an awesome little board.

Have you tried using the composite video or even the S video output to make sure the board is working properly? There's a chance that either you have issues with the board, the Game Gear itself, or if the composite and S video work then set doesn't like the RGB output. If you have one on hand, try a PSOne screen with both the RGB and composite out. I found they can take both a true C SYNC or composite video on the C SYNC in lines on the screen. They seem to have a wider tolerance of the signals. If you still get problems with that screen on both RGB and composite then the issue is Game Gear itself or you got a bad GGTV board. The GGTV and revision 2.0 use CPLD logic so there's a chance the program code on the chip could be screwed. That would sure mess things up...

Forgot to say that if you do have a PSOne screen it has to be the NTSC model for 60Hz signal since there are PAL ones with 50Hz and that most likely wouldn't work since the Game Gear is 60Hz.

All fixed, as usual the answer is - I'm an idiot haha

My issues were a combination of two things
Firstly, I forgot that scart-scart cables flip the composite pins around
Secondly the CRT tv I did most of the testing on had a dodgy connection in the scart socket on pin 20 therefore when I tested the flipping of the pin (which I did just on the off chance yesterday) even though that would have fixed my problem, it looked as though it hadn't made any difference. Thank you for your help everybody!

Here's a couple of pictures of my finished consolized gamegear! I realise that its not up to the standards of some of these consolisation efforts like that other game gear or the recent PSP one but ho hum, the real challenege (after I solved my RGB issue) was fitting all the wires into the case haha

A front view - The case was in a bit of a state when I bought it and I had to cut out the screen because I didn't need it and it was in the way. Othwerwise it looks like a stock gamegear which was rather my aim!

And here's the back, again fairly discreet except obviously it no longer takes batteries as that space is occupied by the composite out, the RGB out and the controller port. sorry for the out of focus picture, stupid phone camera.

aaaand here's it running on my lcd tv!

    nicely done!

had to be something silly and annoying like that, always is! im thinking on consoling one myself now but rigging up a master system converter too so it'll play sms and gamegear games.

i think it's even possible to add a player 2 controller port from memory via the ext port(however i could be wrong)

    Thank you:)

Yes it is possible to add a player two controller via the ext port, not sure how exactly though haha, I think you also have to ground an extra point on the Game gear board if using a GG2TV (if that is the method you use) for master system games. I didn't bother myself, I still have two stock game gears and 6 master systems.. not like I'm a hoarder or anything :/ haha

Yes you can have a second player port for SMS games and its pretty straightforward to wire for a SMS pad. You can even buy an adapter to plug straight in the ext port for a few bucks.

SMS games will work in reduced resolution though unless you solder a wire with +5v to a spot on the motherboard.

not sure if i'll go for the GG2TV board method, dropping £40 + for an experiment / tinkering project. at least not at this point in time but would be nice to do.

Well if you're feeling brave you could always build one instead
    http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/ggrgb/ggrgb.html
I had been toying with the idea of building one myself but considering my tendency to make silly mistakes I decided to bite the bullet and buy the ready made board instead, not that it prevented the silly mistakes mind you haha
