After my previous rant about Team Fortress 2 on the 360 I ended up playing through it and now I'm a huge fan. The new game has pushed some of the old memories out of my head and now I've come to really love it. Except for the glitches. As wtih most games, the online play has been around long enough now for people to know some of the glitches in the game, like sky walking. That's where you're able to build improvements and walk above the maps. And it sucks. I was playing 8 vs. 8 last night in a great game when someone deicdes the want to start sky walking. So now everyone is noticing that there's someone in the air building suspended sentry guns. So what happens next? Two other guys on my team want to join him. At that point the game basically ends. It's now 8 vs. 5 since 3 of my guys are standing in the respawn area, looking at each other, and jumping. The players on the other team are starting to leave because they don't particularly like playing against sentry guns 50 feet above them. So now the game is 5 vs. 5 since 3 have left on the other team and 3 of my players are still in respawn. All of the communication on the headset is dominated by "How do you crouch-jump?" and "OK, where do I look now?" The three can't seem to figure it out so they take it out of the respawn area. They find a new wall to stare and jump at. While I was dead I could see their screens, and I watched the enemy come up with a flame thrower and light up all 3 guys who are still just staring at a wall and jumping. Lame. I don't see why developers don't have two options....one area for glitchers/modders and another area for people who want to play the game straight up. It's happening frequently now where every few games I have to close a room I'm hosting because we can't hold enough players since the other team basically leaves. And if they don't leave we get slaughtered because they have 8 fighters to our 5. Either way it just kills the entire game. Instead of a competitive match we have people running around and jumping at walls. Sure, I understand the glitch is available to both teams and that technically is gives neither an advantage. But I didn't drop $300 on an XBOX and Half Life 2 so I could spend an hour jumping in a corner just to stop someone else from using it against me. It's a bummer that this is starting to creep into HL2 and I can only assume it gets worse from here... Just give the glitchers their own area and let them have their fun. I could care less what they do with their own time. But I'm tired of their fun ruining game experiences for the other 15 players.
They apparently patched quite a few "exploits" in the recent PC patch (21st March) but i'm not sure if the 360 version gets these at the same time. "* Updated versions of CP_Dustbowl, CP_Badlands, and CTF_Well with several exploit fixes" They definately didn't fix all the exploits in Dustbowl as you can definately still pipe though the doors during setup time and there have been comments this is due to be fixed next patch. The map "exploits" really don't bug me that much, its speedhackers/aimbotters that really can ruin a round but luckily I play only the PC version on servers where there is a robust ban list (based on steam ID) and active admins enforcing things. This hasn't stopped it becoming my most played game of the last 3+ years, its just that good....
I started with TFC on the PC all those years ago, but since my work nowadays is done on computer I find that I'm not really interested in sitting in the same chair when it's time to relax and play some games. Knowing me, I'd be checking auctions during the 20-second respawn. Same with movies, too....I've never liked sitting at a desk and watching a movie on my PC unless I'm doing other work at the same time. For me those are still couch + tv situations. But....I was thinking about switching back over to the PC for just TF2 only. Maybe. Juuuuuust....maybe.
I completely understand that, I used to work on a pc for 8-10 hours a day and I didn't want to touch a pc the rest of the day. Now I deal with games all day, and I don't want to touch a console...
I've got the 360 version, but I'd rather play the PC version. At the moment I'm trying to save up for my "dream machine" which will roughly cost about $1200. Speaking of glitching, that pisses me OFF. I was in a map once, and everyone on the other team was a Soldier in mid-air, and they were spawn camping us and shooting rockets at the ground continuously. I decided to be the only medic on our team and try ubering the Heavy weapons guy to try to finally kill them, but it didn't work. Also, from what I've heard, the Xbox 360 TF2 players don't know as much about the game as the PC players do. PC players spy check like crazy. On the console version, Spies usually rack up the most kills because no one spy checks. I remember the first time I went Spy, I got 8 kills in one life. For TF2, thats rare. Really rare. Though I did see a Demoman guy get like 40 kills without dying.
It shouldn't surprise you that console game players have more noobs/idiots than PC game players. Maybe it is because when you spend lots of money on a nice PC you generally have more invested into gaming. Could be many things. I play Gears of War and glitching can still fuck up the game with people doing things to try to cheat. Generally though I don't have a problem with it as the people glitching have this tendancy to lose even though they cheat.
The PC HL based games all suffer from glitches. It's not the format, it's the weak code. It happens from time to time on CS:Source when someone stumbles upon a glitch then it will get patched. Then a short time later something else comes up.
I just wish they'd give the host the option of booting people in game. I can boot from the lobby, which I've actually never done before, but I'm assuming that the person can just rejoin after we've started the game. There's another glitch where the demo guy can shoot throrough walls, but that seems to be based more on the quality of the connection. It happened one game so this 14-year old just kept firing into the respawn area during the 60-second setup period. He'd also fire out of the respawn area and blow up sentires during the setup. He kept saying that he's not glitching since technically he didn't create the situation, but it's times like that where 15 other people are basically being held hostage for the enjoyment of one person.
My record if 35 kills without dying as an Engineer. I just play Dustbowl, no time limit, 16 players, 5 points to win. A full game can sometimes take up to 4 hours with the top guys getting 300-400 kills. I'm usually the top guy on my team which is another reason why I want to check out the PC version. I'm sure the competition must be pretty insane. People spy check on the 360, moreso than they did in the beginning. Usually if the other team has 2 spies then I switch to pyro to check for them. In Dustbowl (second round) some people are stationing a pyro at the top of the ladder on the shack just outside the enemy gates. Then they put 1-3 sentries on the roof and a dispenser behind the pyro so he can shoot the flame without stopping. That's a bitch to get around.
I think my best time on TF2 was when I was a Sniper, and I was defending an Engineer who was ballsy enough to try to build a dispenser and fully functional sentry gun right at the enemies doorstep. I killed about 8 guys going after him, and his sentry killed like 5 guys before a Spy blew it up. Then another Sniper got me.
I hate that almost everybody goes for the Heavy+Medic combination. Kudos for the clever strategy tards! apparently they didnt get the memo: sniper pwns both medic and heavy. Anyway, being an engineer is pretty cool, I love making turrets. There should be more games with defense items and unmanned weapons/vehicles.
Yeah, the heavy-medic combo can be tiresome, especially if it starts working and they decide to add another heavy-medic combo to the mix. Again that's usually when I switch to pyro and run into the respawn and burn the medics while they are charging up. I guess you can say I bring out the pyro when I'm pissed off at the other team..heh. Another good way around that is to have a demoman plant charges on the ground near the capture point. The blast won't kill them but it will usually throw them back or at least off of the capture point, and by the time they get back the uber has ended.
